Preparing HTML equivalents for SGML files

IMPORTANT NOTE: DO NOT USE HTML EDITORS! (NETSCAPE, AOLPRESS, ETC.) TO EDIT FILES FOR THE BRBL DATABASE (WEBTEXT). THESE CAUSE CODING CHANGES WHICH RESULT IN INDEXING ERRORS. EDIT USING ONLY ASCII OR UNIX EDITORS (NOTEPAD, EDIX, EDITPAD...)

***An SGML file must exist first***

1. Mark-up SGML file

edixit [name].sgm
alt-v html [enter]
alt-w
alt-x
NOTE: Several pointers need to be changed in the HTML file. The macros will take care of several of them, such as for the GIF file: <IMG SRC="/navssh/brblmain.gif">
However, for entities such as related files, references should be changed manually to point the HTML versions.
In general, the locations will follow this pattern: "http://webtext.library.yale.edu/sgml2html/beinecke.[name].sgm.html"

2. Check HTML file

Open file in HTML browser and check for errors - which can be corrected manually in EDIX.

NOTE: For miscellanies, you must make one more change MANUALLY - Change all the table headers from
"Box" and "Folder" to "Group" and "Item".

3. Save UNIX version of file in EditPad.

Open EditPad
Open file
Remove solid block character at very end of file (an EDIX remnant), then SAVE file

4. Move the finished file to J:\MSSUNIT\WEBTEXT\HTMLLOAD

Additions of the 856 field to MARC records and of entries to the Public Services file list are described in the instructions for Preparing SGML files for WEBTEXT

Instructions for database administrator.

Load to server.

Use FTP client [currently WSFTP]  to log on to webpac.library.yale.edu to the directory: \HOME\CLOUGH
Change to the subdirectory \SGML2HTML
Copy files from the local directory (j:\mssunit\webtext\htmlload) to the remote directory.
File will be renamed by sysadmin

After indexing is completed by ITS, erase files from home\clough.
