SGML Tutorial

- Prepare Yourself
- Prepare Your Machine
- Practice

PREPARE YOURSELF:

1. Read over the EAD Application Guidelines (provided in hard copy)

2. Consult these sources for reference:

Gentle introduction to SGML

EAD Tag library

My homepage with links to markup procedures and document structures is at here

PREPARE YOUR MACHINE:

3. You should already have Panorama Pro on your machine, if not, tell me. You can get EditMaster (used in Step 7 of the SGML markup) be copying J:\MSSUNIT\SGMLTEST\EDITM25.ZIP and installing it on your machine. In Step 5 of the SGML markup, you are instructed to validate your SGML file in Author/Editor. Since we do not have licenses yet to install this on all of our machines, you can check the file with Panorama. I can give a demonstration of Author/Editor on my machine if you want to see how it works.

4. Create a directory on your machine to work in named SGMLWORK

5. Into this directory, copy the entire contents of the directory J:\MSSUNIT\SGMLTEST

6. Rename the files named SGMLTEST.* so that "SGML" is replaced by your initials. (e.g., Diana's files would become DMSTEST.*)

7. Copy the file J:\MSSUNIT\CATALOG to C:\SOFTQUAD\PANOPUB2\CATALOG\CATALOG

8. Copy C:\SGMLWORK\EAD*.* to \SOFTQUAD\PANOPUB2\CATALOG

PRACTICE:

9. Go to Preparing SGML files for Webtext and follow the instructions through Step 9. You will be using ???TEST.BOX and ???TEST.FRN

10. After this is successful, go to Preparing HTML files for Webtext and follow the instructions through Step 2.
