Papyrological Institute at Yale University30 June - 1 August 2003 In the summer of 2003, the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library will sponsor a Papyrological Institute at Yale University for advanced graduate students and junior faculty in Ancient Studies (Classics, History, Religious Studies, Art and Archaeology, and related disciplines). The institute, which will run from June 30 through August 1, will be focused on Greek and Latin papyri, with emphasis on those from the Roman garrison housed at Dura-Europos, in keeping with Yale's commemoration in 2003/2004 of the work of Michael Rostovtzeff. The principal goal of the institute is to provide sufficient instruction and practical experience to enable the participants to make productive use of texts on papyrus in their research and to become active scholars in the field of papyrology. Hands-on experience with original materials will be combined with lectures and assignments addressing historical, bibliographical, and methodological questions. The papyrological institute at Yale is the first in a series of summer institutes taking place under the aegis of the American Society of Papyrologists; the second institute, in the summer of 2004, will be at the University of California at Berkeley. Admission to the institute is by application. Enrollment is limited to twelve participants. Applications are welcome from qualified individuals without regard to institutional affiliation. No prior experience of papyrology is expected, but a high degree of competence in ancient Greek and Latin languages is required. A full-time commitment to the activities of the institute is required of the participants, who are expected to be in residence in New Haven for the duration of the institute. The instructional sessions and lectures will take place in the Beinecke Library, and participants will also have access to the other library resources at Yale. Instruction will include four 90 minute sessions per day, five days per week, intermingled with lectures and time for independent study. The instructors will be Ann Ellis Hanson (Yale University) and Hélène Cuvigny (CNRS, Paris); the lecturers will include Ruth Duttenhöfer, Adam Bulow-Jacobsen, and Roger Bagnall. Participation in the institute is free of charge and not for credit. The participants will neither be graded nor issued a transcript. The American Society of Papyrologists will provide a certificate of participation to those completing the institute. Housing and board plans in a Yale dormitory will be available for a fee to the participants. Applicants are expected to seek financial support from their home institution to facilitate their participation, but grants will be available to any participants who do not have other means of support. Applications, which consist of a completed application form, a current curriculum vitae, and two letters of recommendation, must be received by 15 February 2003. Notification of the decisions of the acceptance committee will be made by March 15th.
