Subject: Classification Web activated

Dear Cataloging Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that the Library's subscription to Classification Web has been activated and is now available. But, a few notes and reminders before you begin.

  • We have 34 ports so you should logout when you finish your inquiry. There is no automatic timeout.
  • Please go through the tutorial before you begin. Some of the navigation is not intuitive; you will not be able to jump right in and start using the software. NOTE:
  • You do not need to be logged on to view the tutorial; go through it before you log on.
  • Access to Class+ expires on Thursday March 27, so be sure to familiarize yourself with Classification Web before then.
  • The password is read only and should not be shared with anyone. Consult me if additional staff need to be added.
  • User name is [contact JS]
  • Password is [contact JS]
  • Url:
  • Use Internet Explorer.
  • Post questions to Yulcat. Steven Arakawa will try to answer, but if he cannot he will post to the Classweb list.
  • You will note that you can link to ORBIS Webvoyage and Cornell's catalog. Each time you do, it opens a new window, so you want to logout of that part when you finish your search.
  • The defaults are set administratively (Steven Arakawa or me right now). We will review the settings after we have a little more experience with the product.
  • The default setting is for 'Enhanced', but if you click on the extended menu, you can select Hierarchical and override the default for that session.
  • This tool also provides access to LCSH. Please go through the tutorial and play around with it. It may offer some features not available through ORBIS or LC.
  • Finally, after you have a couple of weeks experience, let Steven Arakawa and me know if you think we need to arrange a formal training session.

Good luck.

Joan Swanekamp
Chief Catalog Librarian and Head of the Catalog Department
