Form/genre tracings

The Rare Book Team uses the LCSH topical subject headings 'Periodicals' and 'American newspapers' subdivided in a nonstandard way to collocate form or genre of materials by place. This principle is applicable to other identified form/genres now traced as subject headings, especially if subdivisions unauthorized for subject headings are available for form/genre terms.

Present practice 650:4: [Form/genre] |z [Place]
Examples 650:4: Periodicals |z Colorado.
650:4: American newspapers |z Massachusetts |z Boston.
Advantages
  • In current use
  • Can be retrieved with subject and keyword searches
Disadvantages
  • Neither term is authorized for geographic subdivision in LCSH
  • Confusing use of authorized topical subject headings intended to denote works about such periodicals
  • Not readily identifiable as a local tracing
  • Derived into other libraries' cataloging copy through the utilities
Authority control implications 650:4: not subjected to automated authority control processing

Alternative 1: Uses field 655 (index term--genre/form) with terms from authorized thesauri

Alternative 1 655:7: [Form/genre] |z [Place]. |2 [Source code]
Examples 655:7:Periodicals |z Connecticut |z New Haven. |2 rbgenr

655:7:American newspapers |z Massachusetts |z Boston. |2 lcsh

Advantages
  • Standard use of MARC--data fit definition and purpose of field 655
  • Same Orbis search key as present practice
  • Is distinguished from topical subject headings
  • Can be retrieved through subject and keyword indexing
  • Would require only minimal change in current practice
Disadvantages
  • Would require change in current practice
Authority control implications Field 655 not subjected to automated authority control processing

Alternative 2: Uses field 690:4 (Local subject added entry--topical term; source not specified)

Alternative 2 690: 4: [Form/genre] |z [Place].
Examples 690:4: Periodicals |z Connecticut |z New Haven.

690:4: American newspapers |z Massachusetts |z Boston.

Advantages
  • Same Orbis search key as present practice
  • Can be retrieved with subject and keyword searches
  • Not derived into other libraries' cataloging copy through the utilities
  • Would require only minimal change in current practice
Disadvantages
  • Not a topical subject--does not conform to defined contents of field 690
  • Would require change in current practice
Authority control implications Field 690:4: subjected to automated authority control base file processing
