MARS Response:
This match involved two separate issues that resulted in a situation
that MARS is currently unable to identify as 'special'. If the bibliographic
heading had been a 711/conference name heading, the heading text would
have matched multiple authority records and no change would have occurred
(it would have been reported as a heading that matched cross-references
in multiple authority records).
In this case, there was no match on any heading in a personal name authority record. Therefore, the software assumed that the heading was tagged incorrectly and looked for a match with a different tag (and in which the tag flip was authorized). Since the flip from x00 to x11 is an authorized tag flip in MARS, the software used one of the matching records and flipped the heading. (P.S. - (The authority record selected is (arbitrarily) the last record based on LCCN).
The only solution I know of at this time is to turn tag flipping off.
Doing so would prevent the correction of many incorrect field tags in Yale
records. Let me know if you would like us to change your specifications
so that tags are not corrected.

I have found, though, that an older NLM publication, "Application of MeSH for Medical Catalogers", contains more complete background information on this and other recent changes in the structure of MeSH headings (available at http://www.nlm.nih.gov/tsd/cataloging/catmesh.html). The NLM MeSH authority record containing the authorized form of this particular Publication Type subdivision is record D020475.

The is a previously unidentified issue. MARS added the final period based on the presence of the period in the LC authority record. This type of final punctuation is prohibited by MARC 21, and the Z1 Descriptive Cataloging Manual requires its removal whenever modifying an authority record. Initially, I had hoped to resolve this issue by working with LC to remove the incorrect final punctuation from the LC authority records. My initial research, however, uncovered almost 5,000 LC 100$t/110$t authority records that contain incorrect final punctuation. Even worse, records are regularly being added (dated 2001) that contain incorrect final punctuation.
Based on the above research, we have added this issue to our list of desired enhancements. No date has been set for implementation of this enhancement, but I hope that it will be completed in 2002.
