NACO Coordinating Committee

NACO Coordinating Committee Minutes

Date: 9 December 2003

Present: Steven Arakawa, Sarah Elman, Fanny Hsieh, Maria Hunenko, Mickey Koth, Cécile Mandour, Rick Sarcia, Manon Théroux (chair and recorder).

1. RLIN Save File

In January 2004, RLG will be deleting all NACO authority records in the save file that were created before November 1, 2003. Manon reported that all of the pre-2003 NACO records in Yale's main save file, and many of the 2003 records, have been contributed. The committee divided up responsibility for the remaining records from 2003, including records for those units not included in the main save file. All pre-November 1 records should be contributed by the end of the year.

2. NACO cataloger independence

Rick Sarcia is now fully independent for both names and series authority records. He will be responsible for reviewing all authority records created by NACO catalogers on the Arts & Sciences Team from now on.

3. NACO training for new staff

Manon will be doing NACO training starting in late January. Staff to be trained include: Cindy Zweis, Dorothy Rachmat, Larry Heiman, Lenore Rouse, Eileen Smith, and Abdul Hannawi. Many of these catalogers already have some NACO experience and the class will serve as a refresher for them. The committee discussed reviewing responsibilities and tentatively decided that Manon would be responsible for Eileen, Lenore, and Abdul; Steven would be responsible for Dorothy; Rick would be responsible for Larry; and Fanny and Mickey would jointly be responsible for Cindy (Mickey for personal names and Fanny for corporate names and series).

Two new staff members will not be trained: Saeko Sato and Susan Karpuk. Saeko should refer headings needing to be established to Keiko Suzuki and Susan should refer headings to Earl Roy.

4. BFM reporting

LC has changed its requirements for BFM reporting. Only new headings need to be reported now. Changes to existing headings do not need to be reported.

5. Series policy document

The Cataloging Coordinating Council had only limited time to discuss the committee's first draft of changes to the NACO series policy document <http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/series_policy.htm>. The committee should make further revisions and submit to CCC again. In its next draft, the committee should address more fully the question of whether it would be appropriate to include information other than local call numbers in the 090 field of series authority records.
