NACO Coordinating Committee Minutes

Absent: Mickey Koth.

1. Change in Reviewing Responsibilities

While Mickey Koth is on leave, Fanny Hsieh will take over her reviewing responsibilities.

2. Upcoming NACO Training

Manon will be conducting NACO series training this summer and NACO names training this fall. Dates still to be determined.

3. "NACO History at Yale" web page

Manon has converted the "NACO History at Yale" document that was compiled by Maria to a web page. Committee members suggested a few additional changes. We will send the URL to NACO catalogers and ask if they can contribute any additional details or fill in gaps.

4. RLIN21

Committee members discussed the upcoming RLIN21 implementation and its effect on NACO work. According the the latest timeline, NACO catalogers will be able to test the NACO-enabled RLIN21 client sometime in August and will begin using it for production work sometime in September. The RLIN authority file will have been converted to Unicode by September, which means NACO records will need to be input with the diacritics *after* the letter. This will be confusing because Voyager will not yet be converted to Unicode and catalogers creating bib records in Voyager will be putting diacritics *before* the letter. It seems best to implement some kind of proofreading of NACO records during the first few weeks at least. NACO catalogers could be paired up by language whenever possible and look over each others records to make sure the diacritics have been properly entered.

5. NACO Independence Guidelines

Manon had sent a query to the PCC discussion list asking how other libraries are dealing with the question of how to decide when an individual cataloger may be granted independence for NACO work. Committee members briefly discussed the responses (which varied widely) and agreed to discuss the matter further at a future meeting.
