Date: 6 February 2006
Present: Steven Arakawa, Sarah Elman, Maria Hunenko, Mickey Koth, Cécile Mandour, Rick Sarcia, Manon Théroux (chair and recorder).
1. Announcements
a) Mickey announced that she will be making a presentation to the Voyager Music Users' Group at the upcoming Music Library Association conference on the new "keyword in heading" index in the Voyager cataloging module. She will post documentation relating to the presentation on the "Music Cataloging at Yale" website and Manon will link to it from the "Authority Control at Yale" site.
The announcement prompted a discussion of keyword searching in Orbis in general, and committee members compared notes on keyword searching methods and the usefulness of keyword searches when doing maintenance and authority work. Manon reported that we have been unable to generate a keyword index regen in Orbis since the upgrade to Voyager 5.0; as a result, we have had to temporarily delay some record loads and will probably need to turn off keyword indexing, at least temporarily, during other record loads.
b) Sarah announced that Keiko Suzuki has been declared independent for creating/updating NACO records for corporate names. She was already independent for personal names.
2. Policies for NACO Independence
The committee discussed the latest draft of "Yale Policies for NACO Independence." The document lists both quantitative and qualitative standards to be met before an individual is granted independence for NACO work. It is designed to promote greater consistency in the NACO review process. Manon will incorporate the suggested revisions and forward the document to CCC for approval (if needed) before posting.
3. Adding Death Dates to Headings
The committee discussed 1) the new option in LCRI 22.17 for adding death dates to headings with open-ended birth dates, 2) the CPSO announcement on how LC would be implementing the option, and 3) what the Yale implementation of the option should be. The committee decided to recommend that we follow the LC approach with one added proviso: that catalogers may add death dates in response to patron requests. Manon will draft the recommended policy and forward it to CCC for approval (if needed) before posting.
4. Rule Changes in New Issue of Cataloger's Desktop
The committee reviewed the various changes to the LCRIs and DCM Z1 in the latest issue of Cataloger's Desktop. Since many of these changes affect NACO work, it was decided to send a more detailed message about the changes to the YUL-NACO list, in case the brief announcement on YULCAT-L was an insufficient alert.
