NACO Coordinating Committee Minutes

Date: 6 March 2006

Present: Steven Arakawa, Ellen Ellickson, Sarah Elman, Maria Hunenko, Mickey Koth, Cécile Mandour, Rick Sarcia, Manon Théroux (chair and recorder).

Absent: Stephen Young.

1. Announcements

a) Mickey passed out copies of handouts from her presentation on the new "keyword in heading" index in the Voyager cataloging module (made to the Voyager Music Users' Group at the Music Library Association conference). We hope to eventually be able to link to it from the "Authority Control at Yale" site.

b) Manon announced that Eileen Smith on the Rare Book Team has created a web page listing biographical resources to be used for establishing names of pre-1800 printers, publishers, etc. She welcomes input from special collections catalogers: http://www.library.yale.edu/cataloging/authorities/eurobooktrade.htm

2. New Committee Members

Stephen Young and Ellen Ellickson have joined the committee. They will have joint responsibility for reviewing Rare Book Team name authority records (taking over from Manon). Manon will continue to review Rare Book Team series authority records.

3. Proposed Yale Policy for Adding Death Dates to Headings

The Cataloging Coordinating Council discussed the committee's recommended policy for adding death dates to headings with open-ended birth dates. An additional bullet was added (bullet #5 below) as a result of those discussions. Committee members suggested appending an additional reminder to the policy to note that bib records in Orbis will require changing whenever a death date is added. Manon will promulgate the new policy (see below) on YUL-NACO and on YULIBL.

=====================================

Do not apply the LCRI 22.17 option to add death dates to existing personal name headings with open birth dates as a matter of course. Add the death date only under these circumstances:

Reminder: adding the death date will require the updating of any name-title authority records associated with the name and the correction of headings in Orbis bibliographic records (the "Names" index will let you find all instances of the heading, whether used as a name or a subject heading).

=====================================

4. Policies for NACO Independence

The committee discussed feedback received in response to the posting of the committee's draft policies for NACO independence on the YUL-NACO list. Further revisions will be made and a second draft distributed for comment.
