NACO Coordinating Committee

NACO Coordinating Committee Minutes

Date: 5 March 2007

Present: Steven Arakawa, Ellen Ellickson, Sarah Elman, Maria Hunenko, Cécile Mandour, Rick Sarcia, Stephen Young, Manon Théroux (chair and recorder).

Absent: Mickey Koth.

1. OCLC Save File

Sometimes our NACO records in the OCLC save file come dangerously close to "expiring" (i.e. they have almost reached the end of their 90-day limit). It is easy to do a search to see which records are in need of attention:

Authorities>Search>Online Save File>OK

This search will bring up all of the records in the save file. To see if any records are due to expire soon, click on the "Expires" column. This will sort the records by the number of days left until expiration. If a record is about to expire, you can reset the 90-day clock simply by saving the record to the online save file.

2. Proposed revision of LCRI 22.2

The group saw no reason to object to LC's proposed revision of LCRI 22.2 to eliminate the exception for composers and performers. Steven wondered whether the exception also exists in the pseudonym section of the rule interpretations. Manon will contact Mickey to find out the music cataloging community's reaction.

3. Upcoming NACO Training

Manon will be doing NACO names training, probably in March or April, to be followed soon after by NACO series training. This will be the first time we have used the OCLC version of the PCC NACO Training materials; Manon will let the group know if they differ significantly from the RLIN version of the training materials. She will download the materials into a password-protected site (the same one used for the NELINET OCLC training materials) so that NACO catalogers can access the materials. She will not be distributing paper copies (except to those taking the training). If anyone wants a paper copy, they may print it out themselves. Steven wondered whether the training materials will assume the institution is also using OCLC for creating bibliographic records.

The names training will include training in OCLC Connexion. Manon will ask for the group's help in updating the NELINET training manual to account for changes to Connexion since October 2006. She will base the manual on the version of Connexion scheduled for release the week of March 12th (version 1.72).

While on the topic of OCLC, Sarah reported that the East Asia Library has switched to using OCLC for its NACO work. The Hebraica and Near East catalogers are now the only Yale catalogers still using RLIN for NACO work. Manon will tell Patricia that the East Asia RLIN NACO account can be disabled. Stephen asked whether it is okay to use our NACO authorizations to do bib record searching not related to NACO work; Manon will ask Joan/Patricia.

4. NACO Independence

Since the group last met, Larry Heiman has become independent for series headings and Rowena Griem has become independent for corporate names.

5. Task Force on Core Record Cataloging

This newly-appointed task force in Catalog and Metadata Services, to be chaired by Larry Heiman, has two bullet points in its charge that relate directly to our local NACO policies:

Manon is a member of the task force and will keep the committee informed of the task force's discussion of these issues.
