Metadata 101

Joan Swanekamp announced that the contract had been signed for the course, which will be sponsored by the IAC.

ACTION: Weintraub will continue to take suggestions on the glossary until September 30.

Metadata for audiovisual collections at the Beinecke

Rebekah Irwin announced that the Beinecke is considering hiring a new vendor to provide digitization services, which include a metadata component. She needs to develop a metadata specification in a month's time for the vendor trial. She is currently evaluating the data dictionaries developed by the Library of Congress for its audiovisual projects:

Audio (Source) Data Dictionary
Video (Source) Data Dictionary

The committee recommended resources on metadata for audiovisual material:

  • Association of Recorded Sound Collections
  • Vivian Perlis at the Music Library

ACTION: Irwin will continue to take suggestions for the next month.

Novak suggested that the Metadata Committee develop a schema for audiovisual materials as an extension of the Yale Element Set, which could be implemented at the Beinecke during the six-month trial period.

ACTION: The committee will develop a schema for audiovisual materials as an extension of YES. The schema will include a preservation component.

Next Meeting

Irwin will begin the next meeting with a status report on the specification she is developing for the trial.

Respectfully submitted,
Youn Noh
