Present: Michael Appleby, Matthew Beacom, Rebekah Irwin, Youn Noh, Audrey Novak, Dajin Sun, Joan Swanekamp, Jennifer Weintraub
Absent: Edward Kairiss, Thomas Raich, Karen Reardon, Stephen Yearl
Jennifer Weintraub announced the formation of the Digital Production and Integration Program (DPIP) and offered to serve as a liaison to the group. Rebekah Irwin announced that she will serve as a liaison to DPIP for the IAC Digital Preservation Committee. Matthew Beacom commented that the Metadata Committee will need to coordinate its activities with both DPIP and the Digital Preservation Committee.
ACTION: Joan Swanekamp will circulate DPIP's charge among committee members.
Matthew Beacom announced that Ellen Cordes will be joining the committee in mid-November. At the end of this month, she will begin her new responsibilities as head of Technical Services at the Walpole Library.
Beacom announced attendance figures for the first two sessions: 60 attended on October 5, 40 on October 14. There is a waiting list for the third session on November 7.
ACTION: Beacom will send out a reminder requesting that staff cancel their enrollment in the course if they know they will not be able to attend.
ACTION: Beacom will investigate the possibility of increasing the enrollment cap for the course.
In August, Beacom distributed a questionnaire on YES to staff with responsibility for digital collections. Youn Noh has created a crosswalk mapping YES to local schemas. At the next meeting, the committee will review these and suggest revisions to YES, if necessary.
Swanekamp suggested that before inviting a speaker, the committee needs to develop a series of questions that the forum should answer. Audrey Novak asked about the range of metadata schemas that the committee would recommend or support. Swanekamp suggested that MODS would be appropriate for the next forum because (1) MODS records can be derived from existing MARC records and (2) the level of description it provides is at a midpoint between Dublin Core at one end and MARC at the other. Beacom pointed out that coming up with a portfolio of recommended standards is one of the goals of the committee. Irwin suggested that a focus on implementation would be useful to participants. Swanekamp recommended that the committee educate itself on the appropriate next step by reading.
ACTION: The committee will review Beacom's suggested readings on MODS before the next meeting.
The discussion of future programming will be continued at the next meeting.
