Review of the report of the Preservation Metadata Task Force

As a member of the task force, Rebekah Irwin provided some background on the drafting of the report. David Gewirtz was the primary author; other task force members edited extensively. The report was submitted to Meg Bellinger and the task force was dissolved. Feedback on the report is expected from Bellinger at the next IAC meeting.

Matthew Beacom commented that the report does not provide guidance on how to apply PREMIS or how to translate it into practice. Dajin Sun asked about implementation issues. Irwin replied that one issue is assigning appropriate staff to identify policies for implementation. Stephen Yearl added that tools were needed, specifically, applications that mediate between users and objects and track dependencies when objects are modified.

Joan Swanekamp asked about the appropriateness of VITAL for preservation. Yearl replied that VITAL is intended for resource discovery and that resource management software is needed to track changes to objects. Beacom asked Yearl about the records management perspective. Yearl discussed the distinction between live records and archived records. He commented that the technologist's approach to preservation, focusing upon changes to bitstreams, is necessary for records management. Yearl suggested that commercial tools with customizations would be necessary.

Michael Appleby pointed out that the diagram on page 9 shows that the rights associated with an object can determine which agents have access to the object and the events associated with it.

Irwin commented that Fedora is being tested as a preservation repository.

Collections Collaborative re-grants

We decided not to apply for a grant as a committee. Beacom asked if members knew of any projects in which the committee could play an advisory role. Swanekamp suggested that we return to this after it has been decided which projects will be funded.

Review of the DLF MODS Implementation Guidelines for Cultural Heritage Materials

We reviewed the summary of requirements on pages 5-6 and the examples on pages 72-86. Irwin commented that the Beinecke is interested in implementing MODS. Beacom added that the AMEEL project leaders have also expressed interest. Swanekamp commented favorably on the guidelines and suggested that they would be straightforward for those with a cataloging background to apply.

Other Business

Beacom reviewed the survey results from the Metadata 101 course.

Swanekamp is moving ahead with scheduling a speaker to present on MODS.

Respectfully submitted,
Youn Noh
