Joan announced that DLF has released a report by Martha Brogan on virtual collections, which includes information on metadata practices from different institutions: Contexts and Contributions: Building the Distributed Library.
Rebekah presented the Preservation Metadata Task Force's report on PREMIS to IAC at its meeting on November 27. Joan was also at the meeting. Matthew thanked the Metadata Committee for its feedback on the report.
The presentation provided a high-level view of the report. Rebekah was looking for sign-off and input on the recommendations in the report. IAC was interested in the procedure followed by the task force, its membership, and how the recommendations (specifically, the Base Profile) were vetted.
Rebekah discussed each of the three recommendations, which were all approved.
- PREMIS in VITAL/Fedora
Rebekah reported to IAC that she, Matthew, and Youn have been working with the Rescue Repository, which is likely to continue for some time after VITAL/Fedora has been brought online. PREMIS will be implemented in VITAL/Fedora, but the nature and extent of the implementation are uncertain.
- Participation in PIG (PREMIS Implementors' Group)
IAC was concerned about the time commitment and potential conflicts of interest in priorities for development. Would getting involved in PIG mean that Yale would have to defer to other institutions? Joan assured them that this would be unlikely.
- Governance structures
IAC questioned the match between the nature of the Digital Landscape Committee and the responsiblity of developing university-wide digital preservation policies. IAC, whose membership overlaps with DLC, felt it would be appropriate for DLC to review policy, but not to draft it. IAC recommended the formation of a subgroup to DLC for that task. The recommendation for the Digital Curation Center to develop policies and governance structures for the Library was approved.
Other discussion at the IAC meeting: Meg asked if the museums are committed to digital preservation and if they are interested in working with the Library as partners. Rebekah: Yes and yes. Matthew: The museums may have a different idea of the meaning of digital preservation: they regard digital surrogates as metadata for the original.
Matthew is developing a proposal to form a virtual metadata services team that may take on some of the Metadata Committee's responsibilities. The proposal is a response to a call in DPIP's report for a virtual metadata team. The team would be an operational, not a policy, group. Whether or not it would be library-centric is up for discussion.
ACTION: Matthew will circulate the DPIP report amongst committee members and will invite Fred Martz to give a presentation on DPIP at a future meeting.
