Physical Description Area (300 field) for Sound Recordings

In Progress

6.5B1. Use one of these terms:
   sound cartridge
   sound cassette
   sound disc
   sound tape reel
   sound track film

The following instructions deal with discs only.

Precede the term with a number indicating how many there are:
   1 sound disc
   2 sound discs

6.5B2. Duration
The duration is given in the 300 field only when the disc contains one work; otherwise the total duration is not given in the 300 field.
See Durations for a recording or score with two or more works for stating durations for recordings containing two or more works

For playing time for a recording with a single work, see 1.5B4. Give the duration as stated on the item, using the abbreviations in the appendix of AACR2, in the physical description area (300 field):
hour/hours = hr.
minute/minutes = min.
second/seconds = sec.

Printed vs. actual durations: If there is more accurate information about the durations printed on the recording, container, etc., use it. If the insert says 53 min., 13 sec. and it actually lasts 53 min., 50 sec., use the actual time. However, it's not worth it to actually play the recording to determine if the stated durations are correct.

Examples:
300     1 sound disc (40 min.)
300     1 sound disc (43 min., 23 sec.)
300     1 sound disc (1 hr., 20 min.)

6.5C. State other physical details in the following order:

6.5C2. Type of recording (the way in which the sound is encoded on the item)

   digital
6.5C3. Playing speed
Give in in revolutions per minute (rpm) for discs.

   33 1/3 rpm
6.5C4. Groove characteristic (for analog discs)
Given only when it is not standard for the type of disc.
6.5C7. Number of sound channels
Give the number of sound channels, if the information is readily available, using one or more of the following terms as appropriate:
      mono.
      stereo.
      quad.
When multiple sound channels are given, include all in the 300/b (e.g., b mono., stereo.) and include an 007 field for each.
LCRI 6.5C7: Do not record any term when the number of sound channels is not stated explicitly.
