Sound recording cataloging
a: Title proper
(6.181, 1.181, 5.1B1):
When the title is generic, consider all these elements to be the title
proper: the name(s) of one or more type(s) of composition, or one or more
type(s) of composition, medium of performance, key, date of composition,
and number. All are included in
a.
When the title is distinctive, do not consider medium of performance,
number, key, or date of composition to be part of the title proper. (Instead,
include this information in "other title information" and tag it in
b.)
When the name of a composer or performer appears on the chief source of
information before the titles of the individual works and there is doubt
as to whether the name was intended to be a collective title or a statement
of responsibility, treat the name as the title proper. If the name is that
of the composer of the works, treat the name as a statement of responsibility.
(LCRI 6.1B)
If the title proper includes a statement of responsibility and the statement
or name is an integral part of the title proper (i.e., connected by a case
ending or other grammatical construction), transcribe it as part of the title
proper.
use: 245 04 The piano music of Rodion Shchedrin
h [sound
recording].
not: 245 04 The piano music
h [sound recording]
/
c of Rodion
Shchedrin.
For sound recordings containing two works of the same type by one composer
without a collective title on the label(s), do not consider as a collective
title a title on the container or accompanying material that is made up of
the name of the type plus one or more of the following identifying elements
for the two works: serial number, opus number, thematic index number, key.

h: General
material designator (GMD) [sound recording]
The GMD would follow subfields a, n, and p and precede any other subfield.
Recordings with a collective title: place the GMD following the title
proper.
° Any other title information follows the GMD in
b
Recordings without a collective title: place the GMD immediately following
the first title proper (inclusive of part title and alternative titles but
exclusive of parallel titles and other title information) (Source:
MCB vol. 22, no. 4)
° Second and subsequent titles proper are tagged in
b rather than
in subfield
a
when there is no intervening statement of responsibility in a subfield
c. (Source:
Jay Weitz; MOUG Newsletter no. 58, p. 9)
b: Other title
information
The GMD in
h
always precedes the other title information in
b.
Other title information might include medium of performance, number, key,
or date of composition when the title proper is a distinctive title. It may
include other titles proper when there are more than one title proper.
c: Statement
of responsibility (6.1F1)
Include statements relating to the persons or bodies credited with a major
role in creating the intellectual content of the sound recording (e.g. writers
of spoken words, composers of performed music, collectors of field material,
and producers having artistic and/or intellectual responsibility). Do not
include a statement of responsibility for performers, i.e. those persons
whose participation is confined to performance, execution, or interpretation,
as is usual with "classical" music or recorded speech. Give statements for
performers in a note (511). (If the members of a group, ensemble, company,
etc., are named in the chief source of information as well as the name of
the group, etc., give them in the note area (511) if they are considered
important. Otherwise omit them.)
