The "old" NJ18 standards date from the transition to LC classification in the 70's, when NJ18 superseded the old yale J18 numbers in use for artists/architects. (The "N" before "J18" and the "(LC)" below the call number facilitated physical shelving of new items with the part of the collection using Library of Congress classification. Although the transition from J18 to NJ18 meant the creation of a new artist/architect cutter sequence, J18 shelf cards were interfiled with the new NJ18 shelf cards in the "union" LC classification shelflist for reasons unknown. With the completion of the N class recon and the end of card production, the online shelflist has become the LC shelflist of record, and the old yale/LC shelfcard interfiling confusion is no more. (Catalogers are cautioned not to use artist cutters in J18 call numbers for new items classed to the same artist; only NJ18 artist cutters are valid for new items.)
On May 15, 1991, construction of NJ18 numbers was simplified in Arts & Sciences cataloging in order to increase production. Although other units were encouraged to follow the new standard, cataloging of art materials in units outside Arts & Sciences continues to follow the "old rules." (Scope remains the same for both old and new standards, and the same technique is used to create artist cutters for names beginning with vowels and S). Although Arts & Sciences no longer uses the call number construction technique described below, it is recorded here both to describe and understand ongoing activity in other units and as an aid to interpreting call number practice in recon titles.
| First line | Always NJ18 |
| Second line | Artist cutter |
| Third line | Cuttered usually to main or added entry, BUT: A12, A15, A2, or A3 in some situtations |
| [Fourth line] | [Date of publication] Original rules did not assign a date for
the first edition; date now used on 1st ed. to follow LC practice. A date is always used for later editions. Special rules for catalogues raisonnes |
| Fifth line | (LC) is always used below NJ18 call numbers |
EXAMPLE 1. Artist as main entry heading with editor as added entry heading.
EXAMPLE 2. Author as main entry heading.
EXAMPLE 3. Corporate body as main entry heading.
EXAMPLE 4. Title as main entry heading.
EXAMPLE 5-6. A12 (Artist as main entry heading; no
added entry heading. "Collected works.")
EXAMPLE 7. A12 (Catalogues raisonnes)
EXAMPLE 8. A15 (Individual works of art)
EXAMPLE 9. A2 (Correspondence)
EXAMPLE 10-11. A3 (Autobiography or diary)
EXAMPLE 1. Artist as main entry. When the artist is the main entry heading, the book number is generally cuttered to the editor, the author of the text, or whoever wrote the longest catalog essay. In some cases, an added entry is traced in order to justify the book cutter when an added entry would not ordinarily have been made under the cataloging rules. Alternatively, books with artist as main entry and no editor (artists' books, some exhibition catalogs, etc.) are classed as "collected works" and use an A12 cutter with a date. (See EXAMPLE 5)

EXAMPLES 5-7. Catalogues raisonnes and "collected works": A12 used after the artist cutter. For "collected works," a date was always used in the call number. Catalogues raisonnes, on the other hand, added a third cutter for the editor instead of a date (until the date was used in all call numbers; from that point, both the editor cutter and date were added). "Collected works" appears to have been interpreted broadly for any collection where no editor added entry was justified and in practice seems to have been applied to artists' books and exhibition catalogs lacking an editor when the artist was the main entry.
