PCC Records

At last week's M&P meeting Joan confirmed that we will follow the RLIN guidelines when handling pcc records. PCC (Program for Cooperative Cataloging) records may appear in LTLC (when LC uses them) or in RLIN and OCLC. They are characterized by having a 042 variable field 042 pcc. Apply the guidelines to CONSER records with 042 pcc as well.

The guidelines in a nutshell:

If you make ANY change to a record with 042 pcc, add a |dCtY to the 040 field and REMOVE the 042 pcc field. (Do not count adding 927/928 as a change, however.)

If at all possible, we don't want to cause a situation that would warrant removing the 042 field, so avoid making minor changes to these records. (Many pcc records will be core records in the future and core records may lack a lot of the notes many of you consider standard.) Adding "Includes bibliographical references and index" is not warranted under these circumstances, for example. Generally a tracing decision change is not warranted; we should always be following LC, and presumably pcc cataloging does as well. A warranted change: serial title change not yet recorded on the CONSER record (but you must still remove 042 pcc if the change is made).

Also, for the time being, within Arts & Sciences, we will consider any record from LTLC or RLIN or OCLC with 042 pcc as equivalent to LC, and will add trailing X when appropriate (i.e. shelflisting not necessary. Note that as with LC this does not apply to belle lettres).

Records with 050 04 or 050 _4 have not been shelflisted by LC, so there is a chance the number will duplicate an 050 00 call number. If this begins to happen too frequently, our team policy of using trailing x with nonbelletristic pcc bib records may be reconsidered.

Here is an example of a pcc record from LTLC. Note that this is a full record E/L blank.

The guidelines also apply to core records, E/L 4.
