Exporting the record from RLIN to a Yale Library Workstation (The PASS command)
If you only use OCLC Passport as your bibliographic database, skip to the next section: OCLC: Using the XPO command.
ASSUMPTIONS:
A few things to know about RLIN for Windows and RLIN
1. You must use RLIN for Windows software to use CLARR.
2. You don't need to start CLARR and connect to OrbEdit before you can pass or export records from RLIN for Windows. You only need to connect CLARR to OrbEdit when you are ready to overlay the records you have exported from the utility.
3. RLIN number searches like fin isbn are cost half what name or title searches do.
STARTING RLIN FOR WINDOWS
=> Select the RLIN for Windows (NOT THE MCGILL RLIN) icon and click on the icon to start the program.
=> At the Open Session dialog box, select DEFAULT and click on the OPEN button. (If you use multiple profiles, select the session you have profiled for using the PASS command.)
=> When the cursor begins to blink at the upper left hand corner, press the ENTER key to begin the automatic logon. (Or log on "manually;" you should use a search-only account; a cataloging/maintenance type account is not needed to use the PASS command) The logon process on RLIN is slow, so be patient (i.e., do not press the ENTER key again if response is not immediate).
=> Once you are in RLIN, search as usual. If you are new to RLIN for Windows, remember that the "send" key is usually the + (plus) key on the number pad, NOT the ENTER key.* (Your expert user may have already re-set the Enter key to SEND.)
NOTE If you want to re-map SEND to the ENTER key, open the SETTINGS menu, select (single-click) TERMINAL. When the TERMINAL SETTINGS box opens, click on SEND MESSAGE in the ENTER KEY section and then click the OK button. (CAUTION: If you use RLIN for Windows for data entry as well, you probably want to create a separate session with the ENTER key retaining its default configuration as NEXT LINE.)
=> If you find a cluster for your book, select the record you want and display the BIB record. At the command line, type pass and send. The PASS command will copy the entire RLIN BIB record (including multiple screens, and in any format) and call numbers entered in the RLIN HOL record's CALL and LCAL fields.
TROUBLE SHOOTING TIP If after giving the pass command the RLIN for Windows stops doing anything, use the NT Task Manager's end task function to close RLIN for Windows. Open RLIN for Windows again, check the SETTINGS menu under PASS COMMAND to make sure the PASS option has been re-set to disc file.
NOTE that call numbers embedded in RLIN MHO fields are not copied. You may want to copy the call number if it is in an MHO field, but check to see if the library has not already entered it in the BIB record's 050 _4 field. If there is none, you can use the Windows copy/paste function to copy the MHO call number into the Orbis record's 949 field.
=> Search the next title. Pass as many records as you feel you can work with comfortably and accurately.
=> Logoff from RLIN and then close the software after the logoff is complete. (Click on the x in the upper right hand corner of the window)
