Guide to Searching RLIN21

   Logging on

Click on the RLIN21 icon on the Start menu.

The RLIN21 logon window opens. Under Profile Name, select SML Cat Mangmnt update.

Click once in the Password field or press the tab key. Type in your password, then press Enter or click the OK. You will be logged on to the RLG Union Catalog Database.

To search a record, select the radio button next to Title, Author, Subject, ISBN, ISSN, LCCN, or Record ID. Note: You can search a series title the same way you would a monograph title.

   Search Options

You can search by Title, Author, Subject, ISBN, ISSN, LCCN or Record ID.

  • Omit both the command and the index term.
  • Truncation in title, author, etc searches is implicit--do not enter # or ? at the end.
  • Search retrieval is in browse format (retrieval displays/highlights the closest hits).

   Search Example

A title search for the serial Baum Bugle will give you the following results.

By clicking on the hyperlink for the Baum Bugle you will be able to view 10 records relating to this title. You have the option of displaying the records in List, Brief, Full or MARC format. Below is an example of records viewed in brief format.

Limiting results after the retrieval can be done using the Limit hyperlink for Alternate Searches. The Limit hyperlink is to the left of the display options (see picture under Printing section), and the limiting options are self-explanatory. For Alternate Search retrievals, the Limit hyperlink only displays after an item in the browse index has been selected. Because of the simplicity of use, we would generally recommend using the Limit hyperlink (unless you work with large files).

Display the record to be exported and verify that the correct record has been selected. To print the record displayed, click on the Print command next to the Export command.

This opens a separate print screen (not shown). To print the record from the print screen, click the Printer icon or File-->Print or Ctrl-P.

IMPORTANT: Do not attempt to print the record from the original RLIN 21 window or click on the Print command next to Email; this may cause the software to print ALL records retrieved.

If this is your record, select EXPORT. You will see a message stating that the record was sent to your RLIN import file C://Voyager/Import/RLINimp/pass.sav. Click OK.

In Voyager, check Options-->Preferences-->Mapping. Make sure that the box marked Local Import displays MARC21 MARC-8. This preference will remain until you change it. Import your record as usual (Record-->Import-->New File-->RLINimp-->pass.sav-->OK). Procedures for editing and importing the reocrd into Voyager will be the same as with RLIN for Windows.

  • The Back/Forward buttons are the arrows on the toolbar.
  • Clicking on the Previous Searches link will display a hyperlinked search history
  • Multiple records under the same heading are default sorted by the latest publication date.
  • Use the Sort By buttons at the top of the multiple record display to rearrange the sort by Author, Title, or Year.

Log off by using the Exit command. The Exit command is the last command on the blue banner at the top of the RLIN21 window, below the toolbar. (Do not click on the X button on the upper right window or you will have to sign on again to reconnect).

The "Thank you for using RLIN21" window displays as shown below.

Click on the Refresh icon on the toolbar or click on the link Go to RLIN21. The Refresh icon is below the Help menu. If the connection has timed out, click on connect again.

   Closing the Program

Close the program (click on the X at the top right of the window) only when you no longer need to search RLIN (e.g., at the end of the day).
