One Month

Understand basic MARC tagging for monograph records (1XX, 245, 300, etc.)
Understand and perform relinking procedure

Learn to identify and compare call numbers and locations on cards to those on records in Orbis

Distinguish between LC and Old Yale call numbers
Distinguish between oversize and regular size
Distinguish between the various library locations
Format simple call numbers in the MFHD

Perform Quality Assurance for Official boxes

Evaluation Criteria. Staff under training will be assessed on their progress and achievement at the end of this month according to the following criteria:
- Reading and interpreting an Official (monograph) card correctly
- Searching a record effectively using the basic Voyager search options
- Navigating smoothly between bibliographic, MFHD, and item records
- Interpreting the 852 field quickly and correctly in a MFHD record
- 98% accuracy in relinking for SML

Two Months

Add new bibliographic records to Orbis from OCLC and RLIN
|
- Learn to search in OCLC and RLIN
- Identify appropriate bibliographic records by comparing the card to the MARC fields in OCLC and RLIN records
- Understand and perform import and Export Q procedures

Learn basic navigation in the Catalog Module of Voyager as it relates to Serials Recon
|
Understand MARC tagging specific to serial records (362, 780, 785, etc.)
Understand and perform simple relinking for serial item records
Understand and perform import and Export Q procedures to add new serial records to Orbis
Format complex call numbers in the MFHD
|

Have a basic understanding of the standards governing the input of holdings in the MFHD
|
Review the CMT online documentation regarding holdings (especially understand gaps, compression, appropriate captions, and the use of punctuation)
Review the photocopied examples of cards and MFHDs in training notebook
|
Evaluation Criteria. Staff under training will be assessed on their progress and achievement at the end of this month according to the following criteria:
- Searching in and importing from OCLC and RLIN appropriate bibliographic records for monographs and serials and achieving 95% accuracy in importing
- Correctly creating a MFHD record and adding basic holdings according to established standards
- 98% accuracy in relinking for SML
- Performing complex searches effectively (with little or no duplicative effort)
- Formatting complex call numbers without major errors that affect access

Three Months and Beyond

Gain independence for flags that require relinking of item records
|
- Correctly relink item records to appropriate full level records
- Delete the MFHD and bib of the provisional record
|
|
Recognize and manage more complex problems such as complicated title changes, complicated holdings, etc.
|
Use Voyager, the bibliographic utilities, the items on the shelf, and various other resources to understand the relationships between records
Consult the approved document for caption abbreviations
Identify and determine the relationships between serial records based on the changes in the publication
Continue to consult various resources to correctly represent gaps in holdings, add indexes & supplements, etc.

Perform Quality Assurance for Serial boxes
|
|
|
Gain full independence with periodic review
|
With the approval of reviser, resolve all problems and remove flags
Leave flags on for review if there is any question or difficulty in solving the problem
|
|
Assist with other projects beyond Serials recon clean-up

Evaluation Criteria. Staff under training will be assessed on their progress and achievement at the end of this month according to the following criteria:
- 98% accuracy in relinking for SML
- 95% accuracy in handling title and issuing body changes
- Adding holdings correctly in the MFHD record according to established standards – using the appropriate caption, punctuation, etc.
*With the reviser’s approval, the trainee will be given independence as to various flags or procedures. After this independence is given, the trainee should still continue to raise questions and concerns regarding any problems he/she cannot resolve on his/her own.
