Levels of Access for Visiting Researchers
Level I (retrieval privileges)
Level I provides researchers a card for retrieval privileges, which does not include borrowing privileges.
Level I grants researchers access to Sterling Memorial
Library & Bass Library after 6pm. See the library hours for details.
Level I enables researchers to request library materials for
in-building use.
Retrieval cards can be obtained by anyone with valid research
purposes, without charge, 7 days per year.
Use “Place Requests” to retrieve materials and have them
delivered to the circulation desk of the selected Yale University Library.
Level II (stacks privileges)
Level II provides researchers a card for stacks privileges, which does not include borrowing privileges but grants access to the Sterling Memorial Library stack tower

The fees for Level II (card for stacks privileges) privileges is
$10 per day or $27 per month. There are categories of users who are exempt from the fee.
Level III (stacks and borrowing privileges)
Level III provides researchers access to the Sterling Memorial Library stack tower and borrowing privileges (including books from stacks that are restricted).
Maximum Number of Loans: 50
Level III grants researchers access to Sterling Memorial
Library & Bass Library after 6pm, including libraries that require swipe access. For more details see library hours for details.
The fees for Level III privileges is
$65 per month (minimum of three months) or $710 per year.
Yale Alumni, candidates for the Yale Bachelor’s degree on
official leave of absence, and Unregistered candidates for
the
Yale graduate degree may purchase stack access and borrowing
privileges for a fee of $15.00 per month or $15.00 per year
Faculty and graduate students from RLG institutions may purchase stack access and borrowing privileges for a fee of
$25.00 per month. Undergraduate is eligible for stack access
upon application.
Candidates for the Yale bachelor’s degree who are not attending the summer term and are in regular enrollment status are eligible for stack and borrowing privileges during the summer without charge.
