Introduction
The Yale University Library is a generic term for the libraries of Yale University.
These include Sterling Memorial Library, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library,
Cushing/Whitney Medical Library, Law Library, and many other school, department,
and college libraries.
The libraries have been developed primarily as the working and research collections
of the faculty, students, and staff of the university. It is expected that users
who are not affiliated with the university will have exhausted other resources
before turning to the Yale Library. The intent of these regulations is to insure
access to the library for members of the Yale community and to provide means
whereby its materials may be made available to other qualified students and scholars.
It is not possible to offer service to non-Yale undergraduate college, high school,
or elementary school students, except as indicated below. By Federal Law or depository
agreements, the collections of the Government
Documents and Information Center are available for use by the public.
The following regulations are generally applicable to all Yale libraries.
However, the regulations in individual libraries may vary, and the prospective
user of school, departmental, or special
libraries should inquire as to possible departures from these regulations.
Patrons who have been issued borrowers' cards by Sterling Memorial Library (the
main library) are eligible for borrowing privileges at other lending libraries
in the system.
Library privileges are personal and individual. They may not be
transferred to, or used on behalf of, other individuals. Application
for privileges can be made in the Privileges Office of Sterling
Memorial Library on Monday through Friday between 8:30 am and 4:45 pm or
Saturday between 10:00 am and 4:45 pm.
Applicants will be asked to show 1 form of valid picture
identification, usually a passport, driver's license or
college/university ID card, and a valid credit card.
If you have further questions, you can contact the office directly via e-mail,
telephone (203) 432-7189 or fax (203) 432-9486 or (203) 432-1876.
Borrowing Privileges
Borrowing privileges are automatically extended to Yale
faculty, registered students, and permanent staff upon presentation
of a valid ID card.
- Alumni wishing to make extended use of the Library may purchase
stack access and borrowing privileges for a fee of $15.00 per month
or $150.00 per year.
- Faculty and graduate students from RLG institutions may
purchase stack and borrowing privileges for a fee of $25.00 per month.
- Other persons engaged in scholarly work, including faculty and
graduate students at other, non-RLG, institutions, may apply for
borrowing privileges. The fee is $65.00 per month with a minimum of
three months.
- Spouses and partners of Yale faculty, staff, and registered
students are eligible for borrowing privileges upon application in
the Privileges Office and presentation of a valid Yale ID card.
Graduate students' partners who are not eligible for Yale ID cards
are charged a fee of $50 per semester.
For those who purchase borrowing privileges, a valid credit card
number must be on file with the library to guarantee the return of
borrowed materials or for billing of fines and fees associated with
overdue or lost materials. If the credit card expires during the
designated borrowing period, the applicant must update credit card
information to continue with borrowing privileges.
All library privileges are granted only to the person named on the
privileges card; therefore all books and cards are non-transferable.
All borrowed materials are due no later than the card expiration date.
