Sterling Memorial Library Circulation Policies
LOAN PERIODS
The initial loan period is two months, subject to recall for another reader
after two weeks. Circulating journals and books needed for reserve may be recalled
at once. Journals less than ten years old do not circulate outside the building.
LOAN PERIODS AT OTHER YALE LIBRARIES VARY.
RENEWALS
Renewal requests will not be taken by phone. Renewals must be done ON OR
BEFORE the due date. Readers may renew books online by using the Your
Library Account feature of the Orbis
online catalog. When overdue books cannot renewed online, use the
Feedback
form and select the 1st button to inquire about the reason. Occasional special
arrangements may be made to accept a renewal request by e-mail
(smlcirc@yale.edu) or fax (203-432-1876). Books may also be renewed by presenting
them at the Access Services circulation desks in Sterling or Bass libraries.
RETURN OF BOOKS
When the library is open, books must be returned to the Book Return Desk in
the Access Services Department. Book drops outside the library entrance may
be used for the return of books when the library is closed. Books belonging
to other Yale libraries will be delivered to the appropriate library. Patrons
are responsible for all materials charged out until the books are discharged.
OVERDUE BOOKS
The due date stamped or receipts placed in the book at the time it is borrowed
is the library's official notice that the book will be due on that date, unless
it is called back earlier for another reader. The borrower is responsible for
the return or renewal of the book on or before the due date. Fines are assessed
beginning the first day the book becomes overdue at the rate of $0.50 cents
per day for normal overdue books and $2.00 per day for books that have been
recalled for another reader. Fines for books recalled for Reserve Reading use
are $2.50 per day.
NOTICES
For non-reserve items, the Library sends a courtesy due date reminder notice
one week before a book is due.
The Library sends a recall notice the day after the recall request is placed.
An overdue notice is sent one day after a book becomes overdue. If the book
isn't returned, a second overdue notice is sent 17 days after the due date.
When applicable, the notice/s will specify whether an item is overdue from recall.
Notices are mailed to addresses (either electronic or postal) supplied by university
registrars and personnel offices. E-mail is used for all library notices unless
the reader has no e-mail address. The reader is responsible for notifying the
library and these offices promptly of any change in address. Readers with university
e-mail addresses who want to receive library notices at non-university e-mail
addresses must set up forwarding from within their university e-mail accounts.
Since the due date and time appears on the printed receipt provided when item
is borrowed, failure to receive notices does not affect the assessment of fines.
When a date is stamped onto an item with no time indicated, the due time is
midnight.
First, second, and final recall notices are sent at one-week intervals in an
attempt to deliver the book quickly to the requesting reader. The original borrower
must respond promptly to recall notices.--
Notices are mailed to addresses supplied by university registrars and personnel
offices. The reader is responsible for notifying the library and these offices
promptly of any change in address.
Since the due date appears in each book (either a stamped date or a printed
receipt provided when item is borrowed), failure to receive notices does not
affect the assessment of fines.
FINES

per day. Patrons are notified by mail when an item has been recalled. The book

to the library by the recall due date.
Billing for replacement of lost or long-overdue material: Material that
has not been returned 35 days after the due date will be declared LOST automatically.
