Report: Academic Library Price Index
Frequency & Release Date: Updated annually and published in early fall by Research Associates of Washington DC.
Content: Chapter 3 constitutes the Academic Library [Current Operations and Acquisitions] Price Index (ALPI) and is part of the Higher Education Price Index (HEPI). ALPI treats the budget composition of college and university library operations in the following categories: personnel compensation, acquisitions, and contracted services, supplies and equipment. Acquisitions are grouped into two broad groups--books and periodicals, and other materials. The books and periodicals category is subdivided into: U.S. college books--using the Choice index as its basis and calculated in the national ALPI report as 20% of purchases; North American academic books, using LMPIC's index which appears in the Bowker Annual as its basis and calculated at 20% of acquisitions; Foreign books, using Library of Congress data, and calculated at 10% of acquisitions; U.S. periodicals, using the USSPI, Faxon data, through 1991 and currently using EBSCO data, and calculated at 40% of acquisitions; and foreign periodicals, using Faxon data through 1991, and currently using EBSCO data, and calculated at 10% of acquisitions. Because the national report's percentage of acquisitions in each of these categories differs from those of most research libraries, Yale Library has used the diskette version of ALPI which permits locally assigned percentages tailored to local expenditure categories. The assumptions made for Yale acquisitions from General Account funds for the last three fiscal years was a rough 16% of acquisitions being domestic books and 22% being foreign books. In addition, of the domestic books, 40% were to be college level and 60% were assumed to be academic level. The serial percentages were 39% domestic and 23% foreign.

Report: Periodical Prices, 1991 - 1993 by Adrian W. Alexander (Faxon)

From 1974 to 1980, issued in Library Journal; from 1981 to 1990 in The Serials Librarian; and from 1991-1994 in Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory. Due to conversion related to new subscription processing system at Faxon, no reports were issued in 1995 and 1996. Feasibility of a revamped study, based on a core list of 12,000 titles rather than on the entire Faxon database, is under consideration.
Content: The most recent report, issued in 1994, had extensive tables with three-year comparisons of average prices by LC classification and by country of publication. Price per title and percent change by abstract and index; average subscription price and periodical price ranges by type of library, as well as U.S. domestic and foreign title subscription price comparison charts.
