Brief description
In May 2000, the library directors of the public and private universities in Turkey formed the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS). The primary aim of ANKOS is shared investment in scholarly electronic resources on behalf of the libraries that are Members of the Consortium and the 650,000 scholarly users they serve. Member participation in ANKOS contracts is voluntary, and each Member is responsible for paying its own invoices.Beginning with just 12 libraries in 2000, ANKOS has grown rapidly over the past three years and now has 77 Members participating in one or more contracts. For the 2003 subscription year, ANKOS has licensed 18 online databases. The Consortium is guided by a Steering Committee, comprised of nine Member library directors, who meet periodically throughout the year to take necessary decisions about ANKOS business. The detailed work of the Consortium is distributed among a number of Working Groups, each of which is chaired by a member of the Steering Committee. The Middle East Technical University (METU) Library serves as the ANKOS Center. Prof. Dr. Bulent Karasozen, METU Library Director and ANKOS Chairman, coordinates the activities of ANKOS and its Working Groups, in consultation with the full Steering Committee.
