Using the Epson Flatbed Scanner
The easiest way to scan images is to use Photoshop.
1. Turn on the Scanner, and then turn on or restart the computer. The scanner must be turned on before you start up the computer, or the software won't read that a scanner exists. Click on the Photoshop icon to start.
2. Under File, choose Import and then EPSON EXPRESSION 1640XL.

A window for the Epson scanner will appear. Choose "Professional Mode". In this window you can set the settings: resolution, shading, etc. Place the document on the scanning bed, close the top and click "Preview". Drag the Marquee on the Preview screen so it encompasses the image you wish to scan but not extra space (this keeps scanning times down). If you have two images, you can add another Marquee.
At the DCF, scanning is typically done at 600 DPI, at either 8-bit Greyscale or 24-bit Color. Target size is generally "original".

6. Click "Scan" and the image will scan. Depending on the resolution and size of the image, this may take a minute or so.
7. When the scan is finished, the Epson window will disappear and you will be left with an image in a Photoshop window. Save it as a TIFF image in the proper folder. You can make thumbnails, JPGs, or edit the image in Photoshop. The User Manual is on the desk. You can make derivatives in Photoshop or in IrfanView (a free program also available in the DCF, and useful for batch processing files).
