John Robinson Block '77
John Robinson Block, longtime publisher and editor-in-chief of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Toledo Blade, has been a journalist and newspaper editor since graduating from Yale in 1977, serving in numerous reporting and editing jobs. He is also vice chairman of Block Communications, which has television stations and cable systems in five states. An independent, he has been involved in planning coverage and editorials in every presidential race since 1980. During his career he has lived and worked in Miami, New York, Washington, New Jersey, Monterey, Ca, London, Toledo, and Pittsburgh. Mr. Block, a devoted bibliophile, has built several distinct book collections, lately one on Anglo-American legal history. His love of and respect for rare books and manuscripts is such that he has built a special, climate-controlled facility in his home to house his collections. An aviator, Mr. Block holds a commercial pilot certificate. Yale benefits from his interest in the history of flight, as Mr. Block recently gave a generous gift to the Yale Library’s Manuscripts and Archives department to support the processing of the Charles A. and Anne Morrow Lindbergh Papers. The Lindbergh project is special to note because it not only was a perfect match for John’s interests, but also is one that needed priority funding in Manuscripts and Archives because the papers are becoming available for public access in 2012. Mr. Block lives in Pittsburgh with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Caroline. He also has a home in Toledo.
