Stephen F. Gates '68
Steve graduated from Yale in 1968 and received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and M.B.A. from Harvard Business School in 1972. In 1972-73, he studied in England on a Knox Fellowship. He is currently Special Counsel at the international law firm Mayer Brown LLP and a director of Methode Electronics Inc. He has served as Vice President and General Counsel of Amoco Corporation, Executive Vice President of BP plc, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of FMC Corporation and Senior Vice President and General Counsel of ConocoPhillips. During his career, he lived and worked in Boston, Chicago, London and Houston. Steve has supported the renovation of Silliman College Library and restoration of the Yale Globe Collection and is a member of the Yale Library Associates. He has served on the Board of Trustees of the Newberry Library in Chicago and is currently President of the Board of Trustees of the Charleston Library Society, founded in 1748. He is a collector of globes and early books on the use of globes. Steve is a member of the Yale Alumni Schools Committee, is an AYA delegate, and recently served as co-chair of his 45th Reunion Class Gift Committee. He is recent past Chair of the Institute for Energy Law and the Appleseed Foundation. He and his wife, Laura, live in Charleston, SC.
