Library Directorships

Library directors carry the primary leadership role in their departments, overseeing staff, projects, and policies, staying informed of developments in their fields, and providing direction for their respective areas. They work closely with the appropriate associate university librarians to develop and implement collection, technical, and public services programs in their departments. A gift to endowment can fund a directorship in perpetuity, covering salary and expenses of a senior staff member. The library is seeking four new funds to endow the directorships of Integrated Library Technical Services, the Science libraries, the Arts library, and Library Preservation.
Director of Integrated Library Technical Services

The Director of Integrated Library Technical Services has the primary leadership role in the Library for all automation activities, including investigation, design, implementation and ongoing operation and support. It requires a high level of support to staff throughout the Library system and is responsible for the ongoing incorporation and maintenance of new technologies. The position is expected to be active nationally in professional organizations.
Director of the Science Libraries
$2 million
The Director of the Science Libraries provides leadership and direction for all of the University’s Science Libraries: Anthropology, Astronomy, Chemistry, Engineering and Applied Science, Geology, Kline Science Library and Mathematics. Responsibilities of the position include coordination for the science libraries of the various functions of technical, collection, and public services including interlibrary loan, bibliographic instruction, online database searching and network relationship cooperation with the staffs in all libraries in the development of these functions. The director works closely with the appropriate associate university librarians to develop and implement collection and information services programs in the science and engineering fields. An important part of the position’s responsibilities is to develop and maintain channels of communication with science faculty, researchers and other users.
Director of the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library

The Director of the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library (includes Art & Architecture, Arts of the Book Collection, Classics, Drama and Visual Resources) manages all aspects of the Arts Libraries including services, collection development, budget administration, personnel management and facilities planning. Working with faculty, students, senior library administrators, and library staff, the Director evaluates the services, policies, collections, electronic resources, and facilities of the Art & Architecture Library, establishes and implement plans for its continued growth and development and coordinates the programs and collections of the Art & Architecture Library with those at the other libraries on campus. He/she advises the Chair of the Department of the History of Art, Dean of the School of Art, and Dean of the School of Architecture on library matters and is responsible for building strong partnerships with faculty and students, curators and bibliographers, the heads of other University Library departments, and prospective donors. The position is expected to be active nationally in professional organizations.
Head of Preservation

The Head of the Yale Library's Preservation Department provides leadership in preservation for the library system and is responsible for administering and improving the comprehensive preservation program now in place. The responsibilities of the Head include:
- Coordination of strategic planning for Yale's preservation efforts, in consultation with units throughout the system to develop and maintain local preservation initiatives
- Training interns in preservation administration and participation in system-wide planning, training, and policy-setting activities
- Representing the Library in national forums and interacting with funding agencies, serving as the Library's representative to various national bodies
- Writing grant proposals and other reports as required, including the publicizing of programs and preservation issues through the media, published articles, workshops, and formal talks
