Preservation Positions
Director of Preservation
$2 million
The Director of the Yale Library's Preservation Department provides leadership in preservation for the library system and is responsible for administering and improving the comprehensive preservation program now in place. The responsibilities of the Head include:
- Coordination of strategic planning for Yale's preservation efforts, in consultation with units throughout the system to develop and maintain local preservation initiatives
- Training interns in preservation administration and participation in system-wide planning, training, and policy-setting activities
- Representing the Library in national forums and interacting with funding agencies, serving as the Library's representative to various national bodies
- Writing grant proposals and other reports as required, including the publicizing of programs and preservation issues through the media, published articles, workshops, and formal talks
Chief Conservator
$ 2 million
The Chief Conservator is the head of the Conservation Laboratory and develops, implements, and/or administers policies and procedures governing the preservation and conservation of all special collections materials; e.g. rare books, manuscripts, maps, atlases, prints, photographs, posters, drawings and other paper based materials. The Chief works with librarians and curators in setting treatment priorities for special collections materials; facilitates access and long-term preservation of special collections through managing the flow of materials through the Conservation Laboratory and plans and oversees the planning and performing of conservation treatment on the full range of special collections materials. The Chief is expected to create and maintain a complex network of professional relationships inside the library and throughout the conservation and library professions to identify and perfect appropriate conservation treatments to increase the capability of the library system to care for its special collections.
Medical Preservation Librarian
$2 million
The skills of a preservation librarian are needed to preserve for posterity the renowned collection of rare medical books and journals, manuscripts, pamphlets, prints, photographs, and objects in the Medical Historical Library, as well as the general collections in the Medical Library. The Preservation Librarian analyses the needs of the collections and designs appropriate treatments for items ranging from parchment to electronic media. The Librarian acts as an advocate for the collections and educates the Yale community about the need for preservation activities.
Preservation Field Service Librarian
$1.5 million
The Preservation Field Service Librarian position is responsible for coordinating preservation education and outreach to library staff, faculty, students and researchers. This position also monitors book stack environments and keep the emergency response plan current. Working with curators, heads of departmental libraries, and subject specialists this Field Service Librarian is responsible for preservation assessments and working as a liaison in the development of preservation plans for these collections. This position is key to the ongoing development of the Preservation Department in addressing preservation needs for the Library.
Exhibits Preparator
$1.5 million
Each year the Library highlights its rich collections through numerous temporary exhibits in each of its special collections and library locations. The Exhibits Preparator works closely with the curatorial staff and guest exhbits curators on all aspects of design, preparation, and installation to create exhibits that engage viewers while providing optimal care for the collections. The Exhibits Preparator position is critical to conservation efforts to manage risk to and highlight good stewardship of the Library's cultural heritage collections.
Paper Conservator
$1.5 million
The Library's collections of rare and high-value objects include a substantial number of works on paper, including early prints, posters, historic photographs, manuscripts, printed documents, musical scores, drawings, etc. The Paper Conservator position is critical to the Library's efforts to expand its program of ongoing care and treatment of these materials, and to ensure their continued availability and use.
Map Conservator
$1.5 million
Among its holdings of more than 220,000 sheet maps, 3,000 atlases and other related materials, the Map Department collections include over 11,000 rare map prints and manuscripts. The specialist Map Conservator position is critical to the Library's preservation and conservation of cartographic materials, and to ensure their continued availability and use.
