Subject and Library Service Specialists
$ 1,500,000- 2,000,000

Subject and Library Service Specialists are central to Yale’s mission of teaching and research, and to technological and other expert support throughout the Library system. Subject specialists are responsible for the teaching and research needs of students and faculty associated with their subject specialization. They develop the print and digital collections and serves the broader information needs of the Yale community through participation in general reference and instruction programs. Library Service Support specialists provide expertise across the range of Library departments.  The University seeks endowments of at least $1.5 to 2 million for each of the following positions.

Subject Specialists ($2 million)

  • Librarian for Literature in English
  • Librarian for Religious Studies
  • Librarian for Western European Languages
  • Librarian for Drama, Film, and Theatre Studies
  • Librarian for European History

Electronic Collections Librarian ($1.5 million)

This position supports annual expenditure of more than $4 million on electronic collection licenses and subscriptions: an increasingly intricate field which calls for a high level of expertise. The program is seriously under-resourced, and now that Yale is integrating its teaching and learning activities increasingly into the electronic environment, additional curricular calls are being made on this area of the Library’s work. Under the general direction of the Associate University Librarian for Collections and International Programs, this position will support all areas of the curriculum, but it provides particularly crucial support to the sciences and social sciences.

GIS Specialist ($1.5 million)

The GIS Specialist in the Map Collection supports all aspects of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), or the creation and use of spatial data for  purposes ranging from calculating space, analyzing spatial relationships, patterns or trends, to cartogrpahy, visualization, and site managment.  The Specialist assists with collecting and assembling geospatial and statistical data and identifying their sources.  The Specialist also helps with the creation of custom maps and other geospatial rendering, as well as instructing in and supporting the use of specialist software.  GIS data is used for research and teaching by many disciplines at Yale, such as Forestry and Environmental Studies, Archaeology, Architecture and Urban Studies, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Epidemiology and Public Health, and Engineering.

Library Community Outreach Officer ($1.5 million)

Yale University Library has a long tradition of public outreach, partnering with the city of New Haven and regional communities in supporting cultural and educational programs drawing on the resources and expertise of the Library.  Several Library departments have participated in developing and delivering programs for the New Haven public school system, including Manuscripts and Archives.  The Library's Integrated Library Technical Services department works with Yale faculty and others to develop web sites supporting the study of the history of New Haven and other topics of local and regional interest.  The Community Outreach Officer would help coordinate relevant Library programming and act as liaison and advocate within the Library and the community.
