Project Summary
In 2009, the fourth Yale Silk Road Seminar focused on locations along the Northern Silk Road in Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. The regions of Kashgar and Kucha (Kizil) epitomize the Buddhist and Islamic core cultures of the Tarim Basin. These regions share a generally westward orientation of much significance to our understanding of Silk Road societies and cultural productions in the broader context of Eurasian geopolitics in both the historic and contemporary settings. The seminar also included visits to sites in northern Xinjiang along the southern edge of the Altai Mountains on the border of Mongolia and Russia. The intention of this aspect of the seminar was to delve into the nomadic cultures of Bronze Age Eurasia in a region that repeatedly gave rise to "golden hordes" whose influence was felt from China to Europe over at least two millennia.
