- Divinity,
Stacks 013976
-
The goals of this book are "(1) to offer an up-to-date presentation of the
principal methods of critical biblical study, including their assumptions
and objectives; (2) to make the information about these methods readily accessible
to students and other nonspecialists; and (3) to show biblical criticism in
action by demonstrating how particular methods may be implemented in the interpretation
and explication of specific texts." (Introduction)

-
An introduction to and critical evaluation of the various methods used in
the interpretation of the New Testament texts. Most of the book discusses
historical critical methods, with the last two chapters (structuralism and
other approaches) discuss methods that treat the text more as an entity independent
of its original historical context. (Introduction)

"...this long-awaited complete concordance to the Greek NT is the last word
in NT reference tools. It not only gives all the Greek words (even de
and kai) and their contexts, but is based on N-A26, supplying
all the variants listed in the modern critical editions of the NT (Bover,
Westcott-Hort, Merk, Nestle25, Vogels, von Soden, Tischendorf,
and the Textus Receptus). Superscript letters prefixed to the entries
analyze categories of the uses of each word. Volume 2 (produced with the aid
of H. Bachmann and W.A.Slaby) presents a specific survey of NT data: Wortstatistik,
giving the frequency of each NT word, book by book; alphabetical listing of
all NT Greek words, with the forms of each that actually occur and their frequency
of occurrence, from the most frequent (ho, the definite article, 19904
times) to the hapax legomena (listed alphabetically): hapax legomena

"The Exhaustive Concordance of the Greek New Testament (ECGNT) provides
an exhaustive index to the vocabulary of the Greek New Testament according
to the The Greek New Testament, Fourth Revised Edition (UBS4) ... which
is identical in text (though not always in format and punctuation) to the
26th edition of the Nestle-Aland Novum Testamentum Graece (NA26). In
addition, the ECGNT notes all variant readings between UBS4 and the
Greek text that underlies the New International Version (NIV). More than half
of the vocabulary is indexed with full contexts; twenty-six highly frequent
words are indexed by reference only." The concordance entries include frequencies
for the UBS4 and NIV, a cross reference to words related by root or which
share common elements, significant and frequent phrases with frequencies,
as well as giving the contexts with the Greek word in bold type. (Introduction)

"The aim of this work was to present a complete concordance to the Greek OT,
the LXX, including its text of deuterocanonical and aprocryphal books, and
to other Greek versions contained in the Hexapla. The work is based on the
uncial mss. A, B, S, and the Sixtine edition of R (1587 [with corrections
of its obvious mistakes and blunders]). The Hebrew equivalents of the
Greek word are numbered and each entry is followed by a number, in an attempt
to indicate the relation. Proper names are separately presented, and a reverse
index gives the Greek equivalents of Hebrew words. This work is indispensable
for the study of the Bible, but it must be used with caution. The evidence
is limited to four mss.; the Hebrew-Greek equivalences must always be checked.
Once the references are found, they should then be checked in the critical
editions of the LXX for possible variants. An important tool for the use of
this concordance is found in E. Camilo dos Santos, An Expanded Hebrew Index
for the Hatch-Redpath Concordance to the Septuagint (Jerusalem: Dugith,
1973). This index places all the Greek equivalents alongside the Semitic words
that are listed in alphabetical order." (Fitzmyer)

Parallels:
- New
Gospel Parallels. Third edition. (Ed. Robert Walter Funk, Sonoma, CA:
Polebridge Press, 1995.)
- Divinity,
Stacks BS2560 F84 1995
-
The 1985 edition, by Fortress Press, is in two volumes. "This synopsis is
governed by formal narrative analysis of the Gospels. This means that the
gospel has to be read sequentially as well as in parallel with other gospels.
Hence vol. 1 begins with the Matthean Gospel as a whole and juxtaposes to
it the parallels in the other Synoptics; then the Marcan Gospel is so presented,
and finally the Lucan Gospel. Appendices deal with John the Baptist, the Twelve
and the Seventy, and with narrative summaries and transitions. Volume 2 presents
the Johannine Gospel and the Gospel of Thomas in similar fashion; then the
Infancy Gospels, the Passion Gospels, and the fragmentary Apocryphal Gospels.
The text is that of the RSV..." (Fitzmyer)
The second edition (1990) is a completely revised edition. The text is aligned
by cola, volume 1 of the first edition has been divided into three volumes,
one for each of the Synoptics, and this edition is based on new translations
of the texts. (Preface)

text of each of the four Gospels is set out in parallel columns in its continuity,
and relevant parallels from the other Gospels are given each time they are
called for. The result is that the Synopsis is free of any particular theory
of source-criticism. Relevant parallels from all parts of the NT, from NT
apocrypha, and from patristic writers are cited as occasion offers. The text
used is that on N-A26, and the sigla are taken over from N-A26.
In the 4th ed. (1967) evidence from 68 uncials not previously used was introduced;
from still others in the 9th ed. The apparatus criticus consequently
is full. In the 13th ed., the apparatus has been completely reorganized
to cope with all the added material, but the rest of the page layout remains
the same. Appendices contain the Gospel of Thomas (translated into
Latin [by G. Garitte], German [by E. Haenchen], and English

the origin of the gospel tradition; and tables of parallel passages." (Fitzmyer)

This lexicon classifies the Greek words and idioms of the New Testament according
to shared and distinctive semantic features. The words are grouped in categories
called semantic domains, which are listed on pg xxiv-xxv, following the introduction
to the lexicon. The domains are further divided into subdomains, which are
listed at the beginning of each domain section. The Greek lexical forms with
their definitions are listed under the subdomain headings. The second volume
contains three indices; a Greek-English index, an English index, and a passage
or scripture index.

"The dictionary includes both Biblical Hebrew and Aramaic; words are not arranged
alphabetically, but according to roots, sometimes more putative than real.
Though the etymologies usually need scrutiny and many translations must now
be corrected, this work is still valuable for its abundance of references
to biblical passages and its listing of Hebrew or Aramaic idioms, which more
modern lexica often curtail. For the corrected impression, G.R. Driver inserted
only those corrections which could be made without resetting the sheets. This
lexicon was based on an English translation of one by W. Gesenius, which in
later editions has been a valuable reference tool. BDB has been reissued:
The New Brown-Driver-Briggs-Gesenius Hebrew and English Lexicon with an
Appendix Containing the Biblical Aramaic (Peabody, MA: Hendrickson, 1979).
The Addenda and Corrigenda grouped previously in an appendix
have been moved to the bottom margin of pages to which they refer. The Hebrew
or Aramaic words have been coded to the numbering system of Strong's Concordance,
and an important index has been added. All of this makes this old lexicon
a still valuable tool for study." (Fitzmyer)

"This excellent lexicon purports to be the 3d ed. of KB,
but it is really an independent, greatly improved work. ... It follows more
or less the principles of KB, but the English translations have been eliminated,
the parallels in cognate Semitic languages have been multiplied, a great number
of references to secondary literature have been added, and the etymologies
and meanings greatly improved. It is currently the best Hebrew lexicon available
for the study of the OT." (Fitzmyer)

"The second edition is a reprint of the 1953 edition, together with an important
supplement of over 225 pages, incorporating a German-Hebrew and German-Aramaic
index of words and a vast number of corrections and additions made to the
main text. ... Meanings and discussions are given in both German and English;
but the latter are at times weak and untrustworthy. The Hebrew and Aramaic
words are listed in strictly alphabetical order. The Aramaic part is usually
thought to be superior to the Hebrew part. If constant reference is made to
the supplement, this can be an indispensable tool." (Fitzmyer)
