Using BibleWorks for Old Testament Exegesis

I.  Select the King James Version as the search and as a display version (and any other versions you want to see displayed).
  1. Click on the Change Search/Display Version button.
  1. Select English as the language of the Bible version to be searched in the box under "Search Version." Choose KJV for searching by clicking on it in the box to the right.
  2. Select English as the language in the box under "Display Version(s). Highlight the KJV and any other English versions that you want to see displayed by single-clicking on each one in the box to the right. To unselect a version, click on it to remove the highlight.
  3. If you want to display versions in different languages, select a new language in the box under "Display Version(s)" and click on the versions that you want to see displayed.
  4. Click on O.K. when you are done. The versions selected for display will appear in the Results Window.
II.  Go to the passage of interest to you in the KJV.
  • Type the first verse of the passage of interest on the Command Line in the Command Center, using a three-letter abbreviation for the book or the full name of the book, e.g. gen 22:1 or genesis 22:1, and hit enter.
  • Or, click on the Open Browser Control Box button
    • A Browse Box window will open with book, chapter and verse boxes.
    • Double click on the desired book, chapter and verse or use the arrow buttons. The Result Window will move to the selected reference.
To find the Hebrew word underlying the English word:
III.  Place the mouse cursor over the English word. The Strong's number with lexical information about the Hebrew word from the Strong's Abridged BDB will appear in the Auto-Info Pane below the Results Window. Hold the shift key down when you move the cursor down to the scroll bar of the Auto-Info Pane to keep the window from shifting to a different word.
The Hebrew will be given first. The Hebrew word is followed by the number of the word in TWOT (Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament. Ed. R. Laird Harris et al. Chicago: Moody Press, 1980. DIV. RR BS440 T49). The Authorized Version usage (i.e. the English words used to translate the Greek or Hebrew word in the KJV), and definitions from the Strong's Abridged BDB follow.
IV.  If the English word you clicked on is a verbal form, then the Tense Voice Mood (TVM) number followed by the morphological information will be given below the definition in the Auto-Info Pane. The stem is given first (e.g. Stem - Qal). Match the stem name from the TVM information with the same stem name in the BDB definitions following the Strong's number. The definitions listed under this stem name are the ones that can apply to word in your passage.

V.  Print or download the lexicon article (optional):

To do a concordance word search from the Strong's numbers:
VI.  To see the Strong's numbers in the KJV click on the Strong's Ref Nums button.     The Strong's numbers will follow the word. Tense Voice Mood (TVM) numbers (in parentheses) will follow the Strong's numbers corresponding to verbal forms. A second Strong's number may follow if there is an additional word in the original language that is not translated by an additional word in the English. The search should be done on the Strong's number immediately following the English word.
  • For example, in Gen. 1:4, the Strong's number 07200 corresponds to the verb "to see" and 0853 corresponds to an untranslatable particle.
VII.  Double Click on the Strong's number following the English word and a search will be done on that number. Or, click on the Strong's number following the word with the right mouse button. Click on "Search on Strong's number" in the pop-up menu. A hit list of verses will appear in the verse list box in the command center. This list will give you all the occurrences in the Bible of the English word or words assigned the same Strong's number.
VIII.  To view the verses click on the reference in the Verse List Box, and the text in the results window will move to that verse, and the word or number searched for will be in red type.
IX.  Print or download search hits verses:
  1. Click on the Copy Verse List to Editor button.
