- Designed
to be an exhaustive bibliography of works on New Testament apocrypha and pseudepigrapha
up through the early 1980's. The author defines NT apocrypha and pseudepigrapha
as those documents that "claim to be apostolic and spiritually equal to the
[twenty-seven] New Testament writings"--Introd. Ninety-nine
early Christian works dating mostly from the second though the fifth centuries
are included in the bibliography. Excluded are works on the Apostolic Fathers,
Nag Hammadi codices, Old Testament pseudepigrapha, certain early Syriac writings,
early versions of the New Testament (e.g. the Diatessaron), and modern forgeries.
The bibliography has two sections: (1) General, containing sections on studies,
text editions, and translations; apocalyptic literature; apocryphal acts;
canon; and fragments of unknown works. (2) Major works, organized in alphabetical
order according to the name of the New Testament figure appearing in the title.
There are cross-references to other sections but no annotations. The work
also contains two short sections on early Christian and Jewish apocalypses:
an essay on the Apocalypse of John and its influence on later apocalypses;
and a list of early Christian and Jewish apocalypses, including citations
for the best critical texts and English translations.
