George Merriam Newell (1875-1956), Class of 1904

Born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts in 1875, Newell graduated from Wesleyan in 1904. Like his classmate and Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother, John McGregor Gibb, Newell traveled to China after graduation. He was a teacher at the Foochow Union High School, Foochow, China from 1904-1941. He married Mary Reynolds of Sibley, Iowa in June 1906 and had four children: Josephine Merriam (b.1907), Neil Carlos (b.1910), Dwight Douglas (b.1912) and Marion Jean (b.1914). He returned to the United States to study at Columbia University and received his MA in 1913. Newell was a member of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. He died August 1956 at Penney Farms, Florida.
