Frequently Asked Questions About the Mass Digitization Project
Q: Is Yale digitizing special collections material as part of the project?
A: Not right now. The project processes cannot handle special collections material at this time. However, we hope Microsoft will be interested in a pilot project.
Q: Is Yale part of the Open Content Alliance?
A: Not at this time, but our contract with Microsoft is non-exclusive and we could do a project with the OCA.
Q: What is the time between the books are digitized and then made available on Microsoft's site?
A: The goal is for the books to be available in three months after digitization. This means books should start appearing in spring 2008.
Q: How long will a book be out for digitization?
A: 6-8 weeks.
Q: What about images?
A: Microsoft and Yale hope to work on making images in books searchable in the future. Images will be available in all books that have images.
Q: Are we digitizing journals or serials?
A: No, we are only digitizing monographs
Q: Will we put links to the books in Orbis? How will we do this?
A: Yes, Microsoft will give us links. We don't have a process for doing this yet.
Q: Could we sell copies of these books?
A: Yes, it is possible we could work with a print on demand service at some point.
Q: Are we getting our own electronic copies of the books?
A: Yes we are getting our own copies.
