FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AT THE DRAMA LIBRARY

1. What is the normal loan period?

The normal loan period is two months for regularly circulating books. There are also reserves that circulate for 24 hours.

2. Can I check out a magazine?

Individual unbound magazine issues cannot be checked out. Most bound volumes do circulate.

3. What are the fines for overdue books?

Regular books are fined at 50 cents per day to a maximum of $15.00. If the book is more than a month overdue, you will be billed a minimum of $110.00 ($75.00 for the replacement cost of the book, a $20.00 processing fee and the maximum fine). If the book has been recalled, the fine is $2.00 per day to a maximum of $25.00. If you return a book after it has been billed, you will be credited for the replacement cost but are still liable for the fine and the processing fee. You can pay your fines by check at the Drama Library or by cash, check or credit card at SML or CCL. If you have a bursar's account, they will automatically be transferred there.

4. What does it mean when a book is recalled?

All books are subject to recall after two weeks. A recall means that another reader has requested this book (or a library has requested it for a course reserve). You cannot renew the recalled book and must return it by the due date or be subject to the fine. You can recall it back and the other reader may then only keep the book for two weeks. (You cannot recall the book, if it has been put on reserve.)

5. Where is the bathroom?

There is no bathroom on the third floor where the library is located. The nearest bathrooms are on the second floor behind the costume shop. (Turn left after going down one flight from the library.) There are also bathrooms in the basement.

6. How do I get into the building?

There is a call box near the front door under the archway that connects to various offices in the building that can buzz the door open. Find the number for the library in the digital readout and punch it in to ring the telephone in the library. Ask whoever answers to buzz the door open for you.

7. Where is the LSF? And how can I get books from there?

The LSF is the Library Shelving Facility. It is an off-campus site where books and other library materials are stored. These materials are retrieved by using Eli Express. You cannot go there to get them.

8. What is Eli Express?

Eli Express is the library delivery service. You can ask for books to be retrieved from most libraries on campus and the LSF to be delivered to whichever library you prefer. Delivery should be within 24-48 hours.

9. Can I access the library catalog and other electronic resources from home?

Yes. If your computer has a Yale IP address (i.e. you are in a dorm room) or you have a Yale PPP account, access is seamless. If you use AOL or another ISP, then you need to configure your browser using a proxy server. Once you have done this, you can access all of our electronic resources.

10. Is there an elevator in the building?

No, there is no elevator. The library is on the third floor and is not accessible to those with mobility disabilities. Books can be delivered to other libraries via Eli Express. And special accommodations can be made for students in the Drama School or others who need reserve or other materials not available through Eli Express.
