Updated construction timeline (December, 2006)

The East Asia Library offices will be completed the week of December 11. Haruko Nakamura, Tao Yang, Mary Bradway, and Ellen Hammond will return to their second floor homes sometime during exam week .

The East Asia Library Reference collection will be returned to the main Reading Room (219) December 18-20. At the same time, all periodicals will be shifted to room 210, where they will be accessible until they return to their final location in room 222 in February. Study desks, carrels, and chairs will also arrive during the week of the 18 th and normal use of the Reading Room will resume in January .

Full completion of the remaining renovation work is now planned for February 9, 2007.

September 2006

On September 1, the East Asia Reading Room access began through a new, temporary entrance in SML Room 222. Signs have been posted on the second of SML to alert people of the new routing. All references and current periodical collections are currently accessible in Room 222. See the drawing for a visual look at the construction phase.

August 2006

On August 1, the East Asia Library staff with offices on the second floor of SML (also the primary public service contacts) were relocated to temporary quarters, but their phone numbers stay the same:

New Location: SML 226 (direction is posted outside the East Asia Reading Room)

Haruko Nakamura, Librarian for the Japanese Collection (Telephone: 432-1792)
New Location: SML Mezzanine*

Mary Bradway, Library Services Assistant (Telephone: 432-1790)
Location: SML Mezzanine*

Ellen Hammond , Curator (Telephone: 432-1791; calls will be transferred to a cell phone)
Location: SML Mezzanine*

* Access to the SML Mezzanine is limited to library staff. Please call the person you would like to meet or East Asia Library Assistant Mary Bradway to arrange for access.

The EAL offices on the 2nd floor of SML are expected to open sometime in the fall. Contact information of additional staff members is available here.

June 2006

By June 9th, all the current periodicals in Room 218 and Room 210 have been moved to the upstairs of Room 222, right above the EAL Reference Collection. During the renovation period, the "status quo" will remain: the periodicals will first be divided by language (English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) and then, within each language, arranged in the alphabetical order of the titles (romanized for CJK titles) .

In addition, all the print materials in Room 207 (primarily in art and archaeology) have been relocated elsewhere: most of them went to the SML stacks and some went to LSF. Please check Orbis for their current locations. We are in the process of moving out all the microfilms in Room 207.

May 2006

By May 26th, all the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean reference books have been moved into Room 222. They have been integrated into a single collection according to the LC (Library of Congress) call numbers, with the location code "East Asia Library Reference" shown in Orbis.

February 2006

Most Fv books have been removed from the East Asia Reading Room. Where did all these Fv books go?

Project Proposal

The renovation project represents a unique opportunity to transform the nature of interaction between East Asian Studies faculty, students, visitors, and staff and provide enhanced support for the East Asian Studies program at Yale. The project proposal analyzes the current status and outlines the library's recommendations for the renovation.

Timetable

The renovation project is expected to be completed at the end of 2006. Construction will occur during the summer and fall in 2006. East Asia Library staff members are currently working with the architects to plan construction in a way that will preserve as many reader services as possible. However, study and teaching space will be much reduced during fall, 2006. Construction will proceed at the same time as the SML/CCL Renovation Project, which may affect the timetable.
