The East Asia Library is delighted to announce that the Japanese Film Ephemera Collection (http://guides.library.yale.edu/content.php?pid=146609&sid=1815960) has been established in Manuscripts and Archives, Sterling Memorial Library, Yale University, and the finding aid for this collection is now available.

About the collection:

Japanese Film Ephemera Collection was initiated by Professor Aaron Gerow, a faculty member of the Film Studies Program and the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University, and the finding aid was compiled by Takuya Tsunoda, a PhD student at Yale University. The materials were collected by Aaron Gerow and also supported by donations. Its main contents are handbills (chirashi), press kits, theater pamphlets, and film newsletters, as well as catalogs, and date from approximately 1970 to the present. Most are in Japanese, with some English-language publicity materials. The collection, which is still expanding, currently covers over 600 contemporary Japanese directors and their films along with major film festivals and film events in Japan. It offers a comprehensive resource for researchers investigating the breadth of contemporary Japanese film and visual culture or those studying individual films and filmmakers.

The collected materials broadly document the great diversity in contemporary Japanese film and its culture and represent types of materials often overlooked by academic collections and archives. Therefore, researchers with a broad range of interests, especially Film and Literary Studies, Cultural Studies, Journalism, Sociology, and Art History, may be interested in the collection.

Many thanks to Professor Aaron Gerow for initiating the idea as well as helping us collect materials, Takuya Tsunoda for hard work creating the detailed catalog of the collection, and Bill Landis and Mary Caldera in Manuscripts and Archives for their dedicated help putting the finding aid together.

The East Asia Library is pleased to announce that our two classrooms, SML 207 and SML 218 are now open to the East Asian Studies community from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on weekdays. We found that not many groups were making use of spaces and are hoping increased flexibility will increase use. You are welcome to use them for quiet study, group discussion, meeting, etc. We will put the class schedule outside both classrooms, so everyone will know when the room is reserved. Please kindly leave the door to both classrooms open if you are not in a discussion or meeting.

We recommend you to reserve a classroom with us if you plan to use it for a group discussion or meeting, so that your discussion or meeting won’t be interrupted when other people come to use the room. Also if you would like to use our classrooms after 5:00 pm on weekdays and on weekends, please contact us and we will make the arrangement for you. The main contacts for the EAL classroom inquires are Ms. Mary Bradway (mary.bradway@yale.edu; 203-432-1790) and Ms. Tang Li (tang.li@yale.edu; 203-432-1794).
