If a user only needs to read the text of an article and does not care its format or font styles (level 1), then the need for configuring the computer is minimum. Most personal computers and many (but not all) public workstations in the library now have both Chinese language support and Chinese input method installed, so there is no need to make additional configurations at this level.

In order to view articles in pdf format (level 2), Adobe Reader (version 8.0/9.0) with Asian font packs are needed.
To download Adobe Reader, click here.
To download Adobe Asian font packs, click here.

If you'd like to view the People's Daily article in pdf format, at the first time, you must download and install a PDF use authorization from the database, and Adobe patches. Please follow the steps below:
1. Go to the database by clicking here from computers on campus network that you have authority to configure.
2. Click on the main images to enter the database. Then select any article.
3. When the article shows up like the screenshot below, click on the button "PDF 使用授权" on the top (indicated by the green box in the screenshot below) and save the file "apple.exe" to your computer. Follow the instructions to run "apple.exe". This only needs to be done once for your computer.
4. Run Adobe patches on your computer. For Adobe Reader 8, please download "Patch 8".  For Adobe Reader 9, please download "Patch 8" & "Patch 9". This only needs to be done once for your computer.

Furthermore, if you want to view the article in their original font styles (level 3), you need to download and install supplementary Chinese fonts to the Windows/Fonts folder on your computer. After you complete the above steps, click on "下载字体" button (indicated by the red box in the screenshot below) on your screen to start downloading. Please note that it may take a while to download the supplementary Chinese fonts from the database.
