Reference Services

The East Asia Library offers a variety of reference services to the readers in the fall and spring semesters.

1. Reference Desk in the East Asia Library Reading Room New!

During the fall 2007, the Reference Desk in the East Asia Reading Room opens 1pm to 5pm, Monday through Friday, with the exception of a few University holidays. For assistance with the East Asian collections outside these hours, please either contact individual librarians (see contact information below) or go to the East Asia Library Office (SML 213) on workdays. The East Asia Reading Room remains open at the same hours as the SML building (see here for SML summer hours).

2. In-depth Consultations with Individual Librarians

The primary reference contacts in the East Asia Library are:

Chi-wah Chan (Chinese reference)
E-mail: chi-wah.chan@yale.edu; Phone: 432-4438

Haruko Nakamura (Japanese reference)
E-mail: haruko.nakamura@yale.edu; Phone: 432-1792

Ellen Hammond (Other reference inquiries) Email: ellen.hammond@yale.edu; Phone: 432-1791

3. Email reference

Not sure whom to ask? Let us figure that out for you--just email your question to "east.asia.library@yale.edu".

Library Orientations and Workshops

The East Asia Library staff can conduct library orientations and workshops for Yale faculty and students.

Orientation: This is for users who are new to the Yale library system. It usually includes a tour of SML/EAL and a brief instructional session on how to use Yale library resources. The East Asia Library can provide individual orientations for faculty members, post-doctoral researchers, or visiting scholars. Yale academic departments or programs can request group orientation for their students.

In-depth workshop: This is usually associated with particular courses or particular library resources. Faculty can request library workshops for the courses they are teaching.

For researchers outside the Yale community, the East Asia Library can also provide guided tours if and when the staff are available.

The Sterling Memorial Library and other Yale libraries also offer orientations and workshops on library resources (click here for details), which may be interesting to students and researchers in East Asian studies.

**Handouts from previous East Asia Library workshops are available here.
