African American History: from Emancipation to the Present
Jonathan Holloway
The African American Studies Digital Library, is where you can view images you have seen in class. The Digital Library is a web interface that allows for the search, discovery and retrieval of images from the Beinecke Digital Library.

The Digital Library is a web interface that allows for the search, discovery and retrieval of images from the Beinecke Digital Library. You can perform a quick search on keywords, which searches a brief cataloging record for each image.

Images returned as a result of your search will appear in gallery screens, usually with four images across and twenty images per page. If there is more than one page you will have the ability to page forward and backwards through the pages.

Directions for searching the Digital Library and saving searches as Groups:

1) enter a search into the keyword query box and click Go! Sample searches:
riots
civil rights
king
police
harlem

2) If there are no images in the database that correspond to your keyword query, you will receive the following message: No records found, Please try a different search.

3) If the database includes images that correspond to your query, you will receive a page of thumbnail images and several options for further use:
a) Click an image to see the full catalog record.b) Use 4x and 8x buttons to display larger images.

Saving Groups

4) Click “Save” to build a group for saving. Once you have saved several images by clicking on “Save,” you can view your group by clicking on Group at the top of the screen.

Your group will now display on a separate page. To create a web page or send the images to yourself via email, click on the Make Page button.

You have two saving options for page creation:

a) E-mail option: You can receive an email message containing a URL that may be entered in your browser to retrieve your group. Simply enter your email address and click the Submit button. This email will only contain a link, or pointer, back to your group in the DL. No files will be sent over email and you will need an internet connection to view your files.
b) Save to a local drive or disk option: You can save an HTML page and all the image files to a local disk or drive. Click the “Submit” button to create an HTML page. Your group will display as a web page. To save this page to a local disk or drive, go to the “File” menu and select “Save As.” Browse to chose a place to save your group web page. You are saving both an HTML page and all the image files to a local disk or drive. This means you will be able to view this page without an internet connection because all of the files reside on your computer.

Proxy Server

Why use the proxy server?

If you use a Yale PPP connection or a campus computer connected to the Yale network, you DO NOT need to use the proxy server.

If you answer YES to any of the following questions, you need to use the proxy server to access Yale resources:

Do you use an Internet Service Provider other than Yale (i.e., America Online, SNET, AT&T, Comcast)?
Are you away from campus and connecting via someone else's computer, or are you using another Internet Service Provider while you're away?
Are you visiting another educational institution and trying to access Yale Library resources?
How do I configure my Web browser to use the Proxy Server?

A valid Yale NetID from the ITS User Accounts Office is needed to use the proxy server. If you do not have a NetID, or you do not remember your NetID and password, you can e-mail User Accounts. Note: the Medical Library has its own proxy server, which is needed for access to certain biomedical resources.

Netscape (version 4.7 is recommended)
In the browser, under the Edit menu, select Preferences.
Under Advanced, choose Proxies (you might need to click the plus sign next to Advanced).
On the right side, click Automatic proxy configuration.
Next to Configuration location (URL) type: http://copy.its.yale.edu:8080
Click OK.
You probably will get a pop-up window that asks for your username and password. Use your netID and password.
Internet Explorer (version 5 or later is recommended)

For dialup connections:

In the browser, from the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
Select the Connections tab,
Under Dialup Settings, highlight the dialup profile you use when you want proxy access.
Click on the Settings button to access options for that specific dialup session.
Click in the box next to Use a proxy server in the Proxy Server section
Click on Advanced
Go to the box next to HTTP: in the column Proxy Address to Use and type: http://copy.its.yale.edu
Go to the next space in the column labeled Port and type: 8080
Click the 'OK' box to save all settings
For LAN connections:
Launch IE and select Tools (or you can do this before launching IE from the Control Panel)
Select the Internet Options, then Connections, then LAN Settings.
Check the option "Use Automatic Configuration Script" and enter this address:
http://copy.its.yale.edu:8080
Click OK and OK again.
Open a URL in IE, or launch IE if you are still in Control Panel, and enter your Yale NETID and Password.
To configure Internet Explorer to use a proxy over a LAN connection, see the instructions from Microsoft.com.

How do I get proxy access if I use AOL?

The AOL browser does not allow proxy access. However, you may choose to run Netscape, Internet Explorer, or other browsers while you are connected to the Internet via AOL (just keep AOL running, then start your browser of choice in a separate window). If you do this, follow the configuration instructions for your browser.

Is it possible to connect to Yale resources using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) service?

Yes, see Yale's Virtual Private Networking information page.

What if I need help?

Contact Remote Access Services at (203) 432-5116 or ras@yale.edu.

Note: some companies or Internet Providers may be using a proxy server to restrict Internet access. Because of this you may be unable to configure your Web browser to use the Remote Authentication Proxy Server simultaneously. In this case you will not be able utilize these services.
