What is EndNote?
EndNote is a software program, available

features allow you to transfer groups of references retrieved from online bibliographic
databases into your EndNote database and create bibliographies in a variety
of formats using Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.

What is an EndNote Library?
A Library is a collection of references. When you open the EndNote program, you are asked to select a reference library. You can create multiple libraries, which may contain references for different papers or subjects.
How do I transfer groups of citations from a database search?
You can export groups of references from literature databases to your EndNote library. See the database instructions page for details.
Can I transfer references from Orbis (Yale Library Catalog) to EndNote?
An EndNote connection file is available that allows you to search Orbis through
the EndNote program and transfer records from Orbis to EndNote. For more information, see the database instructions page.
Can I transfer references from my Orbis Bookbag to EndNote?
Yes, follow "Option 2" instructions for Orbis on the database instructions page.
How do I use EndNote with my word processer to create a bibliography?
EndNote installs commands in your word processor to integrate the two programs.
To use EndNote to cite references in a paper and then create a bibliography
for the paper, you insert the necessary citations from your EndNote database
into the text of your word processing document and choose a bibliographic style
(e.g., APA or MLA). EndNote automatically formats the citations. If you are required to create footnotes and a bibliography, first use your word processor to insert a footnote and then insert a citation from EndNote. You will need to format your bibliography using a style that requires footnotes, such a Chicago or Turabian.
What bibliographic styles can I use to format my paper?
More than 5,000 styles are available (e.g., APA, MLA, Chicago) for formatting your citations. Download the complete collection of styles for for version 8 and up.
Does EndNote work with non-Roman languages?
Yes, EndNote version 8 and on support Unicode, but previous versions do not.
Can I import Orbis records with non-Roman characters into EndNote?
Yes, follow "Option 2" instructions for Orbis on the database instructions page.
How do I transfer an existing reference list to EndNote?
If you have a list of references in word processor format, EndNote suggests several options for transferring them to an EndNote library: (1) create a custom tagged format to Import into EndNote (for more information, under the EndNote Help menu, see Contents--Importing Reference Data--Creating Text files EndNote can Import--Section on Creating a Custom Tagged Format); or (2) copy/paste each part of each reference into its corresponding field in an EndNote record template.
A better option may be to search your references in a database and import them to EndNote.
How can I setup the "Find Full Text" feature in EndNote to connect to full text articles?
"Find Full Text" allows you to link a citation in your EndNote library to a full text article, if available. To setup, go to the EndNote "Edit" menu and select "Preferences." Select "Find Full Text " Click in the box for "OpenURL." In the "OpenURL Path" box enter this Web link: http://sfx.library.yale.edu/sfx_local. Click the "OK" button.
Warning: Due to copyright issues with full text access, do not attempt to use the "Find Full Text" for hundreds of citations at once.
For more specific guidelines, please see the Appropriate Use Policy.
Can I transfer references between EndNote and RefWorks?
Yes, follow the RefWorks instructions on the database instructions page to transfer references from RefWorks to EndNote.
Video tutorials are also available for transferring references from Refworks to EndNote and for transferring references from EndNote to RefWorks.
