Past Orbis OPAC Change Requests
Orbis OPAC changes are requested by Yale staff or proposed by PIC committee members.
Orbis OPAC changes are made in a yearly cycle.
Spring 2006 OPAC Changes
- Add “Type of file” label for 516 field to the long view (example: do title search of “Census 2000. summary file 4”)
- Add 544 |n to the long view (example: do title search of “Fritz Eichenberg Wood Blocks”)
- Added a right margin to the main table setting in orbis.css to accommodate right-justified languages (example: do keyword search of “ctyh”)
- Added code to orbis.css to hide the hard rule in Firefox (example: already hidden in IE)
- Moved 852 |m onto same line with 852 |hi so that the word “Oversize” now displays in-line with the rest of the call number, instead of on a separate line.(example: do a title search of “Gao Ershi cun gao”)
- Added hyperlink to title in the titles list display
Winter 2005 OPAC Changes
- The Call Number index on the Simple Search tab has been split into two options: 'Call Number (LC)' and 'Call Number (Local)'. 'Call Number (LC)' is for searching by Library of Congress call numbers; 'Call Number (Local)' is for searching local Yale call numbers.
- As a result of the call number index split, call number linking from the Orbis record display is no longer available, as it does not work for local Yale call numbers.
- Links to 'Help' and 'Ask! a Librarian' have been added to the 'system could not interpret your search error message, and these links now ope
n in a separate browser window in the 'no hits' error message. The links enable users to refer to the Orbis search screen while reading the help
text or consulting a librarian through Ask Live. To see the revised 'no hits' error message, execute a title search for nonsense characters.
- The label 'Select a pickup library' in the Recall and Staff search forms has been bolded. Currently users occasionally forget to select
a pickup library when filling out these forms.
- The descriptor 'Law Library Catalog' has been added to the 'Morris' entry in the Library Catalogs list.
- The 505 first indicator 8 now displays in the OPAC. The field displays under the label 'Contents'.
- The Music Library has been added to the top tier of locations in the Location Limit drop-down. Currently it is listed as a sub-collection
of SML.
- The ISBN and ISSN fields have been added to the Long record view.
Fall 2004 OPAC Changes
- Users can now do a Keyword search in the Orbis web interface without using a boolean operator.
Those who prefer to manually construct Keyword searches with boolean operators can still do so, but usage of boolean operators is no longer required.
Previously, users who attempted to do a multi-word search without boolean operators received an error message. Our OPAC statistics indicate that such errors are common; we expect this change to reduce the number of "zero hits" results.
- A link to "Ask! a Librarian" has been added to the Orbis header.
The link opens in a second window, allowing readers to seek help on a topic
while still viewing their Orbis session.
- A new "Borrow Direct / ILL" button has been added to the Orbis tool bar.
- The "Search In" list of index options has been converted to a drop-down
box.
The top 5 searches were selected based on OPAC usage statistics.
- The login page has been streamlined, and a reference to Proxy Card
holders has been added to reduce confusion on this page.
- All error message text is now in black, with linked text in blue to
more easily distinguish links for those who turn off link underlining in
their browser settings.
- 400/410/411 field redirects now execute an author search on subfields
'abcq'.
- 505 field labels now differentiate between "Contents," "Incomplete
contents," and "Partial contents" based on indicator values.
- 737 field labels now differentiate between "In_" and "Note" content
based on indicator values. Subfields 'i' and 'n' now display in the OPAC.
- 780-785 field redirects now execute a title search on subfield 't,'
making it easier to follow journal title changes.
- 800/810/811 field redirects now execute an author search on subfields
'abcq'.
