Public Interfaces Committee
PIC Minutes
January 19, 2005
1. Announcements.
Kalee reported on last week's Voyager Ivies Plus meeting. It included a developers'
forum at which participants were invited to describe ways they are enhancing
or working around WebVoyage. While participants weren't really doing much to
enhance the interface, some were doing workarounds. The University of Pennsylvania
is toying with the idea of scrapping the interface altogether and writing their
own -- one which would perform a federated search of other library resources,
but that would not offer full WebVoyage functionality (such as online renewals
and recalls, etc.).
2. Language Links.
The latest language links line was presented. Links are above the Text Only--File
last modified line at bottom of the Front Door. Julie will ask Bonnie to: make
the links functional, center the line, and remove the large vertical space between
the two lines. Curators will be asked to review the pages one more time before
this is made live.
3. Library Management Team (LMT) web page.
Alice Prochaska asked PIC to consider the possibility of a Library Management
Team web page, and some type of link from the Front Door to a page for the Library
Administration or a way to contact her directly. This might also be a link off
the Library Departments page. Possibilities for Julie to take back to Alice:
a welcome message from her to be linked from the Front Door, the creation of
a page about Alice's office to be linked to from the Departments page, and/or
a link to an LMT page from Library Departments.
4. RSS feeds for new journals.
Discussion segued into the need for a way to highlight new library services
or resources on the Front Door. Such a prominent link would need to be addressed
by a professional designer. To facilitate the redesign, Karen will gather data
about the use of Quick Links. Katie and Stephen will develop a list with three
categories: need to add to the Front Door Quick Links, need to change or delete,
and absolutely will not change in the Front Door redesign.
Karen will create a new page describing RSS feeds and how to use them. RSS
feeds will become a static link from the library news page.
5. What PIC should be doing discussion--Usability testing.
The initial survey about the library's web site is almost ready to run. Some
minor edits are being worked out. PIC will run this survey on the Front Door
and look at the data that are gathered. This may influence the possible future
usability test. PIC will also review the Quick Links data. By the time these
reviews are completed PIC should be ready to consider a usability test, and
at the same time the new usability lab should be available for running the tests.
