Present: Julie Linden, Dale Askey, Rick Zwies, Andy Shimp, Kalee Sprague, Manon
Theroux, Matthew Beacom (guest)
Orbis display issues (guest: Matthew Beacom)
Index displays: Matthew suggests considering media type icons, at least
for online resources. Viewed how Cornell uses these. Kalee will verify the number
of columns we have at our disposal for index displays.
Brief record displays: Matthew questioned whether certain fields that
currently display in Brief View (590, 530, 533, 538, etc.) are necessary and
helpful to users. Manon pointed out that local notes (590) is used for other
information, particularly special collections. Dale pointed out that this is
not without problems, since the note frequently appears on a record with multiple
copies, and the note may not refer to the book it directly follows. Matthew
feels that the 533 note about electronic reproductions of older texts is unnecessary
in the brief view.
Label text: Matthew asked if there is a better alternative to the label
Electronic version. Rick asked whether we had ever discussed normalizing all
appearances of certain terms (e.g.- online or electronic); Julie pointed out
that we use online on many high profile pages. Suggestions were: Available online,
Online access, and plain Online. Kalee will mock up all suggested changes in
Torbis.
Call number: Matthew suggests changing the text there to read just None
or something similar rather than No call number available which seems to imply
some failure. Kalee will check whether we can edit this system-generated message.
Announcements: Kalee mentioned that the upgrade to the Unicode release
of Voyager has been delayed until summer 2005.
Edition No Longer Available: Gave Rick a brief history of this thorny
issue. Manon reported that the Voyager report with the problem items was larger
than she had anticipated (~14,000; many of these, however, are properly withdrawn
items and thus not problem items). At this juncture, Julie asked the general
question about whether we should be asking for more feedback on issues such
as this, but there was a sense in the group that we would seek feedback on a
case-by-case basis. After some discussion, we came up with the following suggestions:
No holdings available, No holdings information available, Status unknown. Kalee
will mock this up in torbis.
The popup screen generated from these records will be edited as follows:
header - another edition or copy
second bullet - another format, edition, or copy
third bullet - Request through
