Public Interfaces Committee
PIC Minutes
March 17, 2004

Attending: Julie Linden, Katie Bauer, Manon Theroux, Dale Askey, Andy Shimp, Tim Young, Kalee Sprague, Karen Reardon (recorder), Tao Yang, Rick Zwies

Guest: Bobbie Pilette, Director of Preservation

1. Bobbie Pilette visited to discuss Preservation Committee efforts to raise Preservation issues. An example of what the committee has done includes having plastic bags at checkout for patron use. The committee would like to make available the video 'Murder in the Stacks'. Can we link to the video from the FD?

Video is geared for students - produced at Columbia.  The video is not copyrighted and can be open to all folks.

Where to link to it from and what server it will be on will be determined. A reoccurring News item also was suggested - it should be up at the beginning of the new terms perhaps. Bobbie will get in touch with Katy Hall about the News item.

2. Announcements: Kalee announced that the patch for the current release of Voyager will be installed this summer (probably June or July) which will bring us NetID authentication.  This patch lacks secondary authentication on the Place Requests form, we will watch to see if that is a problem.

3. International welcome page: Content has been agreed upon. Julie will talk to Ann Okerson about hiring graduate students to translate it. Dale suggested 10 languages. Tao checked the statistics and these languages will cover 70-80% of non-English speaking international students' first languages.   Library volunteers will then proof the translations.

4. Intro to OPAC statistics: Kalee told the group that statistics have been turned on - they will tell us how people are searching the catalog. Kalee will do an analysis of what is being recorded and will report back to the group. The group will discuss the issue again when Kalee has finished with that analysis.

5. OPAC planning - Katie proposed putting a hold on OPAC changes to consider the 'big picture', do usability testing and set priorities.  Big picture examples might include Orbis keywords with ejournals. OPAC changes might be done on a scheduled basis, not during the academic term. The group discussed the issue and it was decided that Julie and Kalee will compile a list of current OPAC change requests for the committee to review - we will then further discuss the options.
